SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,100, dated December 28,1886.

Be it known that I, REUBEN QUATERMASS, of Moline, in the county of Elk and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Brake Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an attachment applicable for use in connection with the ordi-- nary form of freight-car brake, the object of the invention being to provide for the braking of the cars without the necessity of going to the roofs of the cars for the purpose of reaching the brake-wheel, and at the same time to provide for the throwing off of the brakes, as will be hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a freight-car that is provided with myimproved form of brake attachment, the car-axle being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a view taken on line 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the car, and Figs. 4 and 5 are views of modified constructions.
In the drawings, represents the box or body of a car, that is, as usual, provided with a brake-shaft, 11, having an upper hand-wheel, 12, and connected to the brake-lever 13 by a rod, 14. To the brake-shaft 11 there is secured a sprocket-wheel, 15, which is engaged by a chain, 16, said chain being driven by asprocketwheel, 17, that is carried bya shaft, 18, which shaft is mounted in a bracket, 19, that is secured to the under side of the car.
The shaft 18 carries a large hand-wheel, 20, that is arranged about as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the arrangement being such that by turning the hand-wheel 20 the brake-shaft 11 will be turned and the brakes thereby applied.

In Fig. 4 I illustrate a modified construction, wherein the hand-wheel 20 is dispensed with, its place being supplied by a ratchet- 6o lever, 30, said ratchet-lever being mounted to swing in a yoke, 31, the arms of which yoke are apertured to receive the shaft 18, which shaft in this case carries a ratchet-wheel, 32, between the arms of the yoke. The yoke carries 6 a pawl, 33, that engages with the ratchet 32.
In operation the lever is moved'to the posit-ion indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4, after which it may be reciprocated in order to impart a rotary movement to the shaft 18, which 0 carries a sprocket-wheel of the chain 16; but when released the lever will again drop to position shown infull lines in Fig. 4.
In Fig. 5 I illustrate a construction whereby the chain 16 is dispensed with, connection between the shaft 18 and the brake-shaft 11 being in this case established through the medium of a train of gearing, as 40.

The combination, with a brakeshaft provided with a ratchet-wheel and a pawl engaging the ratchet-wheel, of a short shaft beneath the car-body, intermediate mechanism between the'short shaft beneath the carbody and the brake-shaft, and means for operating 1 the short shaft and disengaging the pawl from the ratchetwheel on the brake-shaft, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with abrake-shaft, of a shaft, 18, located beneath the body-of the car, sprocket-wheels 15 and 17, carried by the brakeshaft and the shaft 18, respectively, a chain, 16, running in connection with said sprocket-wheels, and a hand-wheel carried by the shaft 18, substantially as described.
3. The combination,with a brake-shaft and its ratchet-wheel, of a rod formed with a handle, 26, and carrying a pawl, 22, and a spring, 23, arranged in connection with the pawl, substantially as described. I REUBEN QUATERMASS.
