When it is desired to release the brake, the trainman will shift the weight to the other end of the pawl by pulling outward upon the rod 34 as indicated in dotted lines. `The pawl will then be so counterbalanced as to swing free from the ratchet wheel.

In Fig. 4 is shown a flat car B adapted to be loaded to substantially its full length and hence .the brake operating mechanism will be preferably placed-below the plane of the floor thereof as indicated o-n the side where it may be operated either from the ground or by hanging upon the side of the car where the brakeman will have a clear view of the yard and his proximity to any cars that may be therein.
The several part-s of the mechanism may be made of any suitable materials and thel relative sizes and proportions vthereof as well as the specic details of construction may be varied to considerable extent without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a railway car, of a drum, a brake chain connected tothe d`rum`, means to rotate the drum to tighten the chain, rotation ofthe drum, said controlling means comprising a ratchet ing a slidable as set forth.
2L The combination with a railway car, of a drum, a brake chain connectedto the drum, means to rotate the drum to tighten lthe chain, and means to control the reverse rotation of the drum, said controlling means comprising a'ratchet wheel, a pawl pivoted intermediate its ends, and a weight slidable from one end of' the pawl vto the other, substantially as set forth.
`3. In a railway brake operating mechanism, the combination of'a chain, a drum t0 which the chain is connected, a gear wheel and a ratchet wheel secured to the drum, a pinion meshing with said gear to rotate the same to tighten the chain, a pawl coperating with said ratchet wheel, said pawl being pivotedintermediate its ends on a horizontal axis, a weight associated with the pawl and slidable from one end of the same tothe other beyond said pivot, and a rod connected to the `weight whereby it may be moved in either direction, substantially as set forth.
