Description

aient? @Mira R. WARD, lorEDINBURG, INDIANA.
Letters Patent N o. 106,521, dated August 16, 1870.
STOVEl-GRATIEI.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, R. WARD, of Edinburg, in tte county' of Johnson and in the State of Indiana,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stores and Furnaces; and do hereby declare thatv In order to enable others skilled in the art to whichmy invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe the manner in which the same is or may be constructed, referring to the an'- nexed drawing, whichforms a part 'of this spccication, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and
Figure 2, a longitudinal vertical section.
A represents a plate-of any suitable material, the
' ends a a of which are horizontal or straight, but the main portion is curved downward. Y
The curved portion of the plate Ais perforated with any number and size 4of holes, which are punched through the metal from above, so that -the port-ions of the metal punched out project downward, forming inclined lips b b under the plate, as seen in'iig. 2.
This plate is placed a suitable height above the bottom of stove or furnace to admit a supply of air between the bottom of stove and said plate, which will keep the bottom of the stove and plate from heating,
and supply air through the punched or perforated holes. A l
The plate may require a support under it in case of heavy wood or coal thrown in on it, which can be snpported by abar ot iron placed around ita-o1` across it on the under side, as it may require.
The plate should fit in tight, so that air can only pass up through the perforations; then the chimney or stove-pipe willcause a sliction of air, which will strike the wood and fire under part of wood resting on said plate, which will cause a. bright blaze to shoot out `opposite theholes, and canse the fire to become hotter andl brighter.
This improvement can be made to be used in stoves almost of any `kind that are used at the present time.A
The draught is operated by the usual means, such as dampe'ls or slide on the doors ot' the stove.
A Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desirelto secure by Let- 1. The curved plate A, provided with a number ot perforations, each having lips b b, extending below the `plate, substantially as shown` and described.. j
2. In combination with a stove or furnace of any description, the curved perforated plate A, having lips b b, projecting below the plate, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
Intestimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set myhand this 6th day of January, 1869. R. WARD. [Witnesses:
