FOLDING BLIND.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 10,648, dated March 14, 1854.

To all whom 25 may concern:

Be it known that I, MANSEL BLAKE, of Sutton, in the county of Merrimack and State of New I-Iampshire, have invented a new and useful Folding Blind or Shutter for Windows, Store-Fronts, and Openings in General; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and accompanying drawings, letters, figures, and references thereof. l

Of t-he said drawings, Figures l, and Q, are front and rear elevations of a folding blind, as embodying my invention, such blind being therein exhibited in an unfolded or open state. Fig. 3, is a transverse and vertical section of the same. Fig. 4, is a front elevation, and Fig. 5, is a rear elevation of the said blind as it appears in folded or closed state.

The drawings herewith presented exhibit two sets of my blinds in combination with a single top and a single bottom rail. In constructing the said blind, I employ a folding frame, A, or B, composed of two sets of bars, a a, c, &c., b, b, b, &c., those of each set being disposed parallel to each other and made to lay on or againsty and to cross those of the other setsubstantially as seen in the drawings. At the crossings they are connected by joint pins or screws, c, c, c, &c., or the equivalents therefor, and in such manner as to enable one set of such bars to freely turn on the said joint pins or screws, whereby the frame thus made may be brought out or unfolded (as se-en in Figs. 1, and 2,) and afterward brought together or folded up or closed as seen in Figs. 4, and 5, of the drawings. To each bar, 7), of the said frame is attached one slat, f, of a series of slats or boards f, f, &c., it being bent and made to top over the slat directly below it, as seen in Fig. 3. Those slats, which are attached respectively lto the rear bars o a, &c., of the frame, are fastened to projections, g, g, &c., from the said bars which extend between the bars of the other set, b, b, &c., these latter bars being provided with recesses, h, L, etc., for the reception of the said projection. A screw, z', passes through the slat and into each projection and the slat turns on such screw. While one half of the number` of the slats are firmly and respectively attached to one set of the bars or those designated by the letters, b, Z1, &c., `the other half of such slats are respectively arranged between `the said bars, b, b, and each of said slatsis connected lto the other bars at, a, a, when it crosses it,

Each of the top vand bottom bars or rails, C, D, are to be properly formed or recessed to allo-w of the folding or closing together of the frames A or B, and its slats.

By pressing and moving the bottom rail, D, toward the top rail, C, the blind is folded together or closed. So by drawing the rail away from the rail', C, the vblind will be unfolded or opened apart. j

A store front o-r shutter may be composed of one or more such folding blinds, theslats being made of sheet metal, 4while the crossed bars are of wood, iron, or other proper mal terial. I

What I claim as my invention, is-

'Ihe arrangingV a series of slats, f, f, &c.,`

on one set a, a, a, of the parallel bars of a folding frame of parallel and crossed bars, a, a, a, &o., b, b, b, &c., so that the slats shall not 'only extend from end to end of their several bars, but be made to overlap one another and thereby in connection with the folding frame, form a folding blind or shutter made to operate as specified.
