INFANTS CRIB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 10, 1913.
Application filed May 23, 1912. Serial No. 699,199.
a citizen of the United States, residing at Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Infants Cribs; and I do declare the followin and exact description 0 the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cribs for infants and children.
One object of the invention is to rovide a crib having an improved construction and arrangement of side guards which are pivotally connected to permit either of the same to be swung over onto the opposite side of the crib. 1
Another object is to provide a crib having side guards adapted to be swung over from one side of the crib to the other and which may also be dropped or swung downwardly.
A further object is to provide a hinged side guard which may be applied to a childs bed or crib when the same is built or which may be attached to a bed or crib already 1 described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a crib embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross sectional view of the same;Fig. 3 isan enlarged sectional view through the pivoted inner ends of the swinging slde guards and the adjacent art of the crib to which they are attached s owing the construction of the bolt for pivotally connecting the guards to the crib; Fig. 4; is a side view of the inner ends of the guards ,showing the manner in which theyare connected with a different form of crib from that shown in the revious figures of .the drawing; Fig. 5 1s a horizontal sectional view of t e parts shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a vertical cross section of a crib showing a modified form of the pivoted side guards wherein theyjare constructed to drop or swing downwardly as shown in dotted lines; I ig. 7 is a detall sectional view through the pivotal connection of the inner ends of the attaching m mbers and part of the head section to which to be a full, clear;
the same are connected showing a modified form of connection for said attaching members; Fig. 8 is an enlarged side view of one of the bolts for pivotally connectin the attaching members of the side guar s to the head and foot sections of the crib. Fig. 9 1s a detail side view of a portion of one end of the side guards shown in Fig. 6 illustrating the catch for holding the guards u in operative position; Fig. 10 is a detall side view of the. inner end of one of the guard attaching members.
. Referring more particularly to the drawings, I denotes the head and 2 denotes the foot section of a crib, said sections being of any desired construction and are connected together by side rails 3 or in any other suitable manner. Pivotally connected to the head and foot sections of the bed and adapted to swing between the same are my improved side guards 4.
In the first three figures of the drawing is shown an iron crib;having the body portion of its end sections constructed of a series of vertically dispbsed rods 5 connected at their upper and lower ends to upper and lower cross bars 6 and 7. In the center of the end sections is arranged a rod 8 which is much heavier than the other-rods 5 of said sections and at a suitable position on the rod 8 is a reinforcing collar 9 through which and through the adjacent portion of the rod is arranged a pivot bolt 10 with the inner end of which is pivotally connected theinner ends of side guard attaching members 11 which are here shown in the form of rods connected or formed integral at their inner ends with an eye 12 which engages the bolt IO-and which diverge toward their outer ends and are connected to the upper and lower corners of the side guards 4 of the crib as shown. The side guards 4. in this form of the invention are preferably in the form of oblong frames in which are arran ed series of vertically disposed rods space at suitable distances apart as shown. By thus pivotally connecting the side guards to the center posts 8 of the head and foot sections of the bed it will be seen that said guards may be readily swung over from one side of the bed to the other, thus uncovering or opening either side of the crib.
The bolt 10 which pivotally connects the side guards with the head and foot sections of the crib is provided on its inner end with a flat head 13 and has a cylindrical inner 1 wit portion 14: with which the inner ends of the side guard attaching members are pivotally thus preventing the bolts from turning in guards.
said parts. The extreme outer end of the bolt is threaded as at 16 to receive. a wing or thumb nut-17 which is adapted to be screwed ,up thereon and into engagement with the outer side of the head or foot section of the crib as shown. If desired the bolt may be provided with washers 18 arranged thereon between the head and nut and the adjacent parts with which the bolt is engaged and between the connecting members of the side guards and the adjacent parts of the head and foot sections of the crib.
When my improved side guards are to be employed in connection with cribs already constructed or with cribs having head and foot sections of a difi'erent constructionfrom that shown and described in the first three figures of the drawings, suitable provision will be made for, pivotally connecting the inner ends of the attaching members to the One means for providing for the connection of the attaching members of the guards to a difierent style of head or foot section is shown in Figs. 4' and 5 of the drawings. Tn this instance is shown a head or foot section 19 in which the space between the rods 20 thereof comes at the center of the section. When the guards are applied to a section of this kind it is necessary to provide a suitable support for the pivot bolt of the guards, said support being shown in this instance as consisting of a pair of plates 21 of suflicient length to span'the space between the rods and to extend a short distance beyond the rods to receive clamping lid bolts 22 by means of which the plates are rigidly bolted or clamped to the rods at the desired position thereon. Theplates 21 are provided with alined bolt holes 23 of square or rectangular shape to receive the squared portion of the pivot bolt 24 which is constructed in the same manner as the bolt shown in the first three. figures of the drawings.
Tn Figs. 6 and 7 or? the drawings is shown another modified form of connection between the attaching membersv of the side guards and the adjacent parts of the head or foot section or the bed. this instance the center rod 25 or the head section 26 is not large enough to, permit a hole to be drilled therethrough to receive the bolt such as shown and described in the previously de noeaivi scribed figures of the drawingand when the guards are attached to a crib having head and foot sections of this kind it is necessary to employ a bolt 27 having an eye or similar.
means for embracin the rod thereby securely fastening the bolt in place to receive and pivotally support the inner ends of the attaching members 28 of the side guards 29.
The side guards 29 shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings are also of a difierent construction from the guards previously described and in this instance the guards comprise a lower rod 30 to the ends of which are rigidly secured main end posts 31 to the upper andflower ends of which are connected thev rods forming the attaching members 28 of this form of the guard. The body of the. guards 29 comprises end rods 32 connected at their upper ends by an upper rod or bar 33 and near their lower ends by a lower rod or bar 34, said upper and lower bars being connected by suitably spaced rods 35 which form the sides ofthe guards. The inner ends of the end rods 32 have formed thereon eyes 36 which are engaged with the lower rods 30 of the main frames of the guards whereby the body' or side of the guards is hingedly supported and may be swung downwardly or dropped as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6. of the drawing. The bodies or sides of the guards are held in an upright or operative position inthe main frames of the guards by suitable catches 37 arranged on the upper ends of the posts 31 and with which are engaged studs 38 on the ends of the rod 33 of the sides of the ards. lVhen the guards are constructed in this manner it will be seen that they may be swung from one side to the other of the crib in the same manner as described in connection with the previous forms of the crib and that the sides of the same may also be a the same may be readily swung in one movement and by one hand from one side of the crib to the other and when thus swung over will'permit the infant occupying the bed to be readily reachedfand will also facilitate the making of the bed. This arrangement of the side guard will also facilitate the raising of a mosquito canopy or netting which may be laced over the crib and when swung back will be entirely out of the way and will not interfere with the sliding-of the child from the crib to the mothers bed when the crib is placed against the latter.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the constructionand operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes; in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is;
1. A crib having head and foot sections, said; sections comprising frames having a serisofspaced rods, side guards arranged between said head and foot sections, attaching members carried by the ends of said guards, and attaching bolts secured to the rods of said head and foot sections whereby the attaching members of said side guards are pivotaily secured to said sections to permit the guards to be swung over from one side to the other of the crib.
2. A crib having head and foot sections comprising frames having therein spaced rods, an attaching bolt having a squared portion engaged with one of said rods and having a cylindrical portion projecting from the rod, a thumb nut arranged on sai bolt side guards arranged between said head and foot sections, attaching members carried by said guards and having a pivotal connection at their inner ends to the cylindrical portions of said attaching bolt whereby the guards are pivotally connected to the head and foot sections to permit the guards to be swung over from one side to the other of the crib.
. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
