UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JOHN SLATER, OIENORWIOH, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED WASHER. AND BOILER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 106,414, dated August 16, 1870.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN SLATER, of Norwich, in. the county of Ohenango, and in the State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Washers and Boilers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan "iew of the upper side of my device with the cover removed, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same on the line m .n of Fig. 1.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention is an improvement in washboilers in which an open-work cylinder for containing soiled clothing is pivoted; and it consists in the peculiar form of the ribs or buckets, arranged longitudinally upon the periphery oi the inside of the cylinder, as is hereinafter set forth.
In devices of this class many forms of bucket have been employed for raising and discharging water upon the upper side of the clothes and for causing the latter to rotate within the cylinder, so as to bring each part thereof in immediate contact with the boiling water. But experience has proved that said buckets have been open to serious objections by reason of the expense involved in their construction and the difficulty experienced in cleansing them from the dirt thrown off from .the soiled clothing; all of which difficulties are removed by my improvement.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a boiler of ordinary construction, provided with a cover, B, and having pivoted upon or within its sides a cylinder, 0, one journal, 0, of which passes horizontally outward through one ot'said sides, and has upon its end a crank, D, for use in rotating said cylinder.
, The cylinder (3 consists of two circular metal disks, connected together by means of a series of strips of sheet metal, 0, secured at their ends at equidistant points upon the pe ripheries of said disks, so as to hold the latter in position, with their inner faces parallel.
Secured to and projecting radially inward from equidistant points upon the inner side of the periphery of the cylinder is a series of ribs or buckets, E, each consisting of a thin strip of sheet metal attached at one edge to said cylinder, and having secured upon its opposite edge a cylindrical pipe or rib, as
shown in Fig. 2.
Between the buckets or ribs E is arranged a series of smaller ribs, F, which may have a Ashaped form, or, if desired, may be formed of a straight piece of metal projecting radially inward, as shown.
The cylinder being divided longitudinally, and the sections secured together by means of hinges and a hasp, the device is ready for use, as follows:
A suflicient quantity of suds being placed within the boiler and caused to boil, the cylinderis partially filled with soiled clothing, the sections securely fastened together, and said cylinder slowly revolved, by which operation said clothing is caused by the ribs and buckets to roll within said cylinder, and being at the lower side of the latter, each portion is brought into the immediate contact with the water, the latter of which is continually leaching-through the former, so as to loosen and quickly remove therefrom all ad hering dirt.
In addition to rolling the clothing within the cylinder, each bucket raises and discharges upon the upper side of said clothing a quantity of water, which, in passing downward, carries with it a portion of the dirt,
and greatly assists in the cleansing operation.
The especial advantages possessed by this form of bucket consist in its cheapness and in the ease with which it can be cleansed.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new The buckets E, constructed as described,
JOHN SLATE R.
