Specification of Leltterslatent.
Patented inne il), l Pitti Application filed July 6, 1911. Serial No. 6372186.
To all 'whom/fit may @ancora l Be it known that l, Monats Fono SMITH, .a citizen oi." the United States, residing at 3129 Montgomery avenue, in the eity olf Philadelphia. and AState of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lin provenients in Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates primarily to mul/ t'rple blade razors in which a single mani pnlating holder is adapted to have any one ot' a plurality of blades removably mounted thereon, |at will and particularly to that typeofsuch razors in which the longitudinalv axes of the blade and holder coincide and the blade has ttvo edges simultaneously exposed for use.
Seeondarily, the invention relates to a so vcalled safety razor, in which a double linger- 'iar guard is mounted in such relation "to the shaving edges of the bladeas to prevent contact of the edges when the razor is tilted to a dangerous angle.
One object of the invention is to have one and the same holder to serve for manipulating the blade both in shaving and strop-- ping; the' safety guard being employed. solely for safety purposes and serving no part in mounting the blade v in the holder; the holder being so constructed that both edges of the blade may be honed or stropped Without any adjustment or changing of the parts other than the removal of the guard.
Another object is to produce a razor which will simulate as closely as possible, the effeet and4 mode of manipulation, both in shaving and stropping, of a straightblade integral shank razor and which shall, at the same time, embody the feature of having a double edge so that it can be used either right-handed orlefthanded Without changing the position ofy the aard.A
Another object is to lave the guard reversible from one side of the holder to the other, so that a single edge may be used by 'ither hand in shaving either side oi the ace.
A further object is to have the holder con-` structed of readily separable members se'- cured together in part by means `which also holdsthe interchangeable blade in position. A further object is to provide means for attaining all of the above objects by a sim-- ple, 'durable and cheap construction.
ln car Iying; ont the invention, I employ a holder comprising two counter-part ineinbers, between which the blade rigidly clamped with its cutting; edges protrndiilg on opposite sides ol' the holder in position not only for sharing with either edge, at will, but to expose both l'aees of the blade adjacent to each edge in position lor stroplping; said members being divided hmgitu /dinally in the plane o'l` the blade and ha ving at one end `an interengaging connection, which )ermite the members 'to separate to admit t le blade between. them; saiil connection boing preferably such as will pei-.init the members to move in the plano oi. the blade. At the other end, the members have a connection which predteiuts any relative movement between them and holds them in their assembled relation with the blade; said last named connection preferably :forming a grenier or less portion of the handle. '.ihe guard is olf' the usual toolhed or serrated form and lits .neatly upon either tace ol the holder, in guarding relation to both edges of the blade.
rlhe invention will be fully understood upon reference to the znxcoinpanying draw ings in willich,
.Figures l and i?) are views showing, the razor assembled with and without vthe guard; liig. il is an end View of Fire'. l; Fig. el is a section on the line imei, lziigs. i.` and 3; and Figs. and il are the two l'iarts el' the holder respectively; liig. 7 the handle; Fig. 8 the guard; Fig. 9 the blade; and Fig'. l0 lastly the screw rod oi lthe handle.
The razor comprises a relatively flat holder l. having' a liandle i3 ot' any suitable shape (preferably cylindrical land lcnurled to avoid slipping) with a reduced shank 3 between the holder and the handle, and a reduced finger rest et at' the rear end ol" the handle. The holder l :.nrl a `greater or less portion or' the handle (deeording to the park ticnlar fleiails of eonstrimtion followed) are divided in a longitudinal plane, lo provide elanipiingr jaws l, 1b, :maptf-d io firmly clamp between them a two-:edged blade il, which protrudes beyond the opposite edgjgee of the holder. 'flo interlock the members oi."
the holder` l employ :l headed sin il, pre/lt'- erably f rarried by one' member, while the other member has un end `dol. 7, adapted to engage beneath the head ol' the sind by an endd'ise movement; said members being adaptei'l. il' desired, atier such e. pagenioni, to sii/ingr in their dividing( plone. flho blade is providedA with end noir-lm; Il, one ot' which is adapted 'to el'gago 'libe "inloloo While ho-oher is ldap relavoly Slxort seouzn one holder mombel m 'tween the. members Sembled., he blades L. only conveniently' intere 'versble sllewis'e, 'and iweltbl 'lo secure the @Ms in assembled oa.,
