Be it known that I, ALFRED R. Comm, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at 'lratl'ord, in the county of \Vest-moreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I'Iair-Cutting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hair cutting apparatus.

An object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character provided with a series of blades adapted to be operated by means of a vacuum which is applied to the device, the said vacuum also serving to draw the hair to be cut into the same and in the path of the blades or cutters.

Another object of this invention is to improve and simplify'devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and etiicient in use, and readily operated.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof; and Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are detail perspective views of the parts removed.

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally'my improved hair cutter, comprising a substantially conical-shaped casing 2, provided upon its outer sides with ribs 3, the upper ends of which are provided with offset portions 41, for the purpose of engaging recesses 5 located in parallel rib-engaging members 6 supported upon diametrically opposite points of a base or bottom 7, for the purpose of locking the same upon the end of the casing 2. This base or bottom 7 has fixed centrally thereon an inwardly extending spindle 8, provided at its lower end .with a shoulder 9, upon which rests onehalf of a ball-race 10, the offset half 11 of which is located upon a sleeve 12, which is rotatable upon the said spindle 8. Suitable ball bearings 13 are located in this race and serve to prevent friction and permit the ready turning of the sleeve 12. The upper end of this sleeve 12 is provided with onehalf of a ball-race 14, the offset half of which is carried by the spindle 8, as clearly illustrated in the transverse sectional view of the drawing. Ball bearings 15 are located between the opposite halves of this last mentioned ball race, for the same purpose as the previously mentioned ball bearings. lollars 16 are detachably secured in any suitable manner to the opposite ends of the sleeve 12, and carry oppositely extem'ling twisted arms 17, the outer terminals of which are offset laterally, as at 18, being formed'into a recess 19, and then bent backwardly upon themselves, as indicated at 20, to provide a means for clamping blades 22 therebotween and holding them spirally within the casing 2. The lower extremity of the sleeve 12 adjacent the bottom thereof has keyed thereto a disk 23, provided with a, series of vanes 24, which overlie a series of slanting apertures 25 formed in the bottom 7 of the device. The upper tapered end of the casing 2 has formed thereon a tubular extension 26 adapted to engage a flexible tube 27, which is attached to any suitable apparatus, (not shown) which is adapted to create a suction or vacuum. A longitudinally extending raised rib 28 is formed upon the side of the casing 2, and has formed at one edge thereof an opening 29, through which the hair may be sucked by means of the vacuum into engagement with a cutter bar 30, formed from any suitable material, against which the before mentioned blades 22 operate for the purpose of cutting hair.

From the foregoing disclosure, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a device of tlie'character described is provided for whlch Wlll eflectlvely cut hair or the like, and transfer the same after being cut,

Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A device of the character described, comprising a casing, a bottom provided with a series of openings and detachably secured to said casing, a spindle carried by the said bottom and projecting into the casing, a sleeve rotatably mounted upon said spindle,

means for reducing friction upon the rotation of the sleeve, collars carried by the said sleeve, arms formed upon said collars and means provided by said arms for securing blades spirally upon the sleeves, a slotted rib formed upon one side of the easing,a tubular extension formed upon one end of said casing for engagement Witha vacuumcreating mechanism, a cutter bar supported by said rib adjacent to the slot thereby for engagement with the blades, and vanes carblades, substantially as and for the purposes described. 15
