ERSER Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 8, i913.
application mea aprilia 191.2. Serin N6. 690,716.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, MICHAEL F. HAYES,
ventedA certain new 'and useful Improvements in Erasers, of which the lfollowing is a specication.. i A
My improvements relate lto the class of abrasive erasers in which rubber is usually t-he-main-base or vehicle of the composition used for cleaning surfaces, as in the. case of the so called rubber erasers furnished for the use of stenographers, typewriters and' draftsmen, and for clerical and analogous purposes.
The objects or the invention are, to render an eraser of this class more eifective and convenient 1n use to protect it from unnecessary deterioration or contamination. by
reason o f contact with the hand or ext-raneous substances; and to .provide adequate means for sharpening it, and for cleaning its point by the removal olsoil or smut 1m-- parted to the .point or edge during use, as
after being employed in the removal of ink or substances which are apt to smudge The invention consists in the construction and arrangement oit' parts herein described feature being the combination with the is a 'frontend view or" my improved eraser;
and claimed speciiically, a distinguishing rigid metallic holder or handle for the eraser rubber of a rigid metallic attrition cap tting, and rotatable on said holder in either direction, and performing the double function of a protector for the eraser when the latter is not in actual use'as such, andalso of a cleaner for the rubber after use, as hereinafter :fully set forth. Q In the accompanying drawings, Figure l,
Fig. 2, a central longitudinal sectional elevation taken upon `plane of line 2-2 Fig. l, Fig. 8, is a side elevation ofthe attrition cap and holder, when'in the position shown in Fig.v 2; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the rubber and holder remo-ved from the attrition cap; Fig. 5, a central longitudinal'sectiona'l elevation showing a modiication of the rubber-holder; Figf, is a section, much enlarged, of the outer end of the attrition cap; Fig. 7, a side elevation thereof, showing a `corrugated structure; Fig. 8, a transverse section upon planejof line 7-7 Fign.
It is tobe understood that by the term rubber I herein designate any suitableor t of erasion, residing 1n` 1nV the city,
outer end 1,
well known compound adapted to purposes including the various compositions of rubber and other ingredients known in the art. y
The rubber R, consists of a cylindrical stick' or body portion having a conoidal preferably in the form of a paraboloid, as shown in the drawings, which 1s the best form for practical purposes, altlnough any tapering' configuration circularfin cross section will come Within the spirit and intent of my invention, whichA contemplates in this respecta shape that may be attained by the rotation of the attrition cap A, 1n either direction upon the tubular holder H, over which the attrition The attrition cap A consists of a rigid tube the outer extremity of which is formed with 'a concavity a, having an attritive surface adapted to grind -or abrade the end 7, of the rubber R, when rotated in Contact therewith. This abrasive surface a', may obviously be formed by many Well known expediente, as by roughening by mechanical means, but I prefer to line itwith an abrasive compound which in hardening becomes practically an integral part of the cap. I have found la composition containing comminutcd emery eifective for the purpose, since the amount of material to be removed from the end ff,l ofthe rubber R, in order to clean and sharpen it is comparatively slight under ordinary conditions of use. In order to secure the perfect adhesion of the abrasive lining internally, and to aiiord purchase for the fingers of the user externally, i
the attrition cap A, may be corrugated longitudinally as indicated in Figs. 7 and 8.
The rubber R, is provided with a rigid tubular Vholder o r handle H, fitting snugly over and Contactin with the cylindrical body thereof, and a ordin-g'means whereby the rubber may-be manipulated in use without ingering .the same directlyy-it being well knownf'that rubbers of this character are more or less absorbent, and deteriorate if contaminated. The body of the rigid i tube of which the attrition cap A, is formed, fits snugly over the rigid tubular holder H, so as to be sustained in perfect alinement.
therewith, while rotatable thereon in either direction. Hence, in cleaning the conoidal end r, of the rubber R, the' attrition cap A, or the holder-H, either or both, may be rotated in either directiom'or alternately in opposite directions, as may be found most ber as the latter is worn away. Hence, also owing to the perfect alinement maintained between the parts, the rubber tip if properly cleaned is always perfectv in configuration and therefore adapted to all requirements of use.
In the modification shown in Fig.- 5, the holder H, is formed with an outer casing Il., fitting over the inner end of the attrition cap A. Either the attrition cap A, or the holder H, may be provided With an angular iiange f, to prevent the device rolling on a smooth surface.
The elasticity and resilience of the rubs bei' R, admits of its adjustment within the holder H, to'coiupensate for Wear, &c., and the adjustment of the attrition cap A, on the holder also ,contributes to the utilization ot practically the whole length ot the rubber R.
The use of the attrition cap A, is obvious. W'hen the rubber R, is not. desired for actual use it is protected by the cap A, against contact with extraneous objects. To remove any smudge or dirt from the end r, of the rubber'lt, the cap A, is pressed slightly against it, and turned in either direction, thereby abrading the end 7*, and cleaning it with a minimum of Waste, at the same time restoring and perfecting its shape so that it is in best condition for future use. may be conveniently accomplished by alternately reversing the motion after a par' tial turn et' the attrition cap A, or of the holder H, in either direction,` the complete l rotation of, either part not being necessary.
To remove the dust from the attrition cap the latter is Withdrawn temporarily from the holder H after the grinding Operation, and tapped gently; or the dust may be dis- This lodged by blowing through 'an axial hole an, formed forv the purpose inthe extremity ot ,the cone. For ,convenience of `ident-icationin the claims I have therein designated the end r, of the rubber R, as the tip thereof. The conoidal tip. r, of my improved ferm of rubber adapts it for use in small areas, and for purposes of erasure where the Work is close and intricate, Without danger of disturbing or defacing adjacent lines ormarks,
ing or reniarliing Within lprescribed or desired limits, and hence broadening and enand obviatiug superfluous labor.
What l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
comprising a rigid tubular holder, a co- 'noidally tipped eraserfornied with a cylindrical portion which lits snugly Within said. 'rigid tubular holder, and a rigid attrition cap formed with a cylindrical ortion fitting snugly over, and slidable an rotatable in either direction upon, said rigid-tubular holder, said cap being also formed with an internal yconcave abrasive' surface adapted to contact with the eonoidal' tip 'o the eraser, for the purposeset forth.
Q. An eraser of the character designated, comprising a rigid tubular holder, aconoidally tipped eraser formed with a cylindrical port-ion which tits snugly Within said rigid tubular holder, and a longitudinally corrugated rigid attrition cap fitting snugly over, and' slidable and rotatable in either Guo.
