HINGE MECHANISM.
T 0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALoNsoN D. PERKINS, a citizen of the United, States of America, residing at Los Angeles, in the county ot Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Hinge Mechanism; a nd i do hereby declare the following to be a tall, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rThis invention relates to improvements in hinge mechanismnmore particularly to such as is adapted to be connected between the frames ot' windshield sections, and it may be said to consist in the provision ot the novel features and in the novel and improved construction, arrangement and combination of the parts therein, as will be apparent from the description and claim.
jin object ot the invention is to provide improved hinge mechanism -tor connecting parts together' for movement with respect to each other, and which shall operate to 'frictionally lock the parts at any point to which they may be moved with respect to each other.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of the nature specified which is practical and serviceable, simple in construction. economical to manufacture, strong and durable in use, attractive in appearance, easy to operate, and effective in action.
Other objects and the advantages ot the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, from a consideration of the following description of the preferred `forms of construction in which the invention may be embodied, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a view ot hinge mechanism having the invention applied thereto, taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a View taken on the line 2 2 of 1; Fig. 3 is a view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4f is a view of a modified construction for the hinge mechanism, the cheek plate being removed in order to show the interior parts; Fig. 5 is a View taken on the line 5 -5 of Fig. 4t, and Fig. 6 is a view taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
The pivotally connected substantially annular hinge members 2 and 3 may each be provided with a suitable part 4 whereby Specification of Letters Patent.

they may be connected with relatively movable parts or devices to which the hinge mechanism is applied, and the hinge member 3 may be termed to provide a circularl wall 5 interiorly thereof with which is adapted te engage means interposed between the members whereby they may be frictionally locked in position at any point o t their movement relatively to each other.
Referring now more particularly to the torni ot construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive: lVithin the member 3 is movably arranged a split disk which is recessed in the central portion thereof to permit of disposing springs at each side ot a central boss 7 on the interior of the member 2. As shown, the springs G may be fitted over pins 9 on the parts 10 and 11 of the split disk; the springs being adapted to press against the parts 10 and 11 to have the periphery oit' said parts frictionally engage with the wall 5. A pin 12 passing through a countersunk opening` 13 in the check 8 ot member 3 and threaded into boss 7 ot member 2 may be employed to pivotally connect the members 2 and 3, and the member 2 may be connected with the parts 10 and 11 by means ot projections 14 on the member 2 evtending` into recesses 15 :termed in the parts 10 and 11 and adapted to engage with said parts when said member moved. It desired, one or more reinforcing ribs 16 may be provided to strengthen the connection of the member 2 to the part- 4t.
In the form of the construction shown in Figs. d to G inclusive, the member 3 consists ot a iing 17 having the interior wall 5 adj a'- cent to which is movably arranged the arcshaped parts 1S and 19 against which press the springs 20 which are preferably itted cn pins 21 carried by said parts and may be arranged on each side of the central boss 22 on the interior ot cheek 23 of member 2 and adapted to cause the periphery ot said parts to trictionally engage with said circular wall 5. Extending between the parts 18 and 19 and disposed adjacent to the circular wall of ring 17 are projections 24 carried by member 2 which are adapted to engage with the parts 18 and 19 when the member 2 is moved, as will be understood. As shown, one side of the ring` 17 may engage with an annular shoulder 25 on member 2 and the other side ot' the ring may engage with a peripheral iiange 26 on the cheek plate 27 which latter may be con- Patented Mary 2t?, 1913.
nected with the member 2 by means of a pin 2S passing through the boss 22. The pin 2S may be provided with a head 29 adapted to fit in a countersink 30 in the cheek 23 of the member 2 and it may have a nut 31 threaded on its end adjacent to cheek plate 27 and adapted to bear against the latter.
From the foregoing description of two forms of construction for embodying the invention, the mode of operation of the hinge mechanism will be readily understood; it being apparent that either of the hinge members 2 and 3 can be moved only by overcoming the force of friction between the springpressed movable parts and the circular wall 5; and it will be understood that any relatively movable devices that may be connected with said hinge members are automatically frictionally locked in position at any point of their movement by the user.
Vhile two forms of construction for embodying the invention have been illustrated and particularly described, there are various changes and modifications thereof that will readily occur to those skilled in the art, and the right is therefore reserved to all such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A friction-locked hinge comprising complementary hinge-members, one of said menr bers having an annular interior friction surface and forming a housing for a clutch device, segmental friction blocks disposed in said housing and having an arcuate outer contour to engage said friction surface, springs interposed between said blocks and bearing upon opposite ends thereof, and the other hinge-member having a diskshaped head bearing against the side-periphery of the complementary member and having separate lugs adapted toengage said friction blocks intermediate said springs.
1n testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, this 1st day of May, A. D. 1911.
