Description

duit-ed etwa parte epm.
Letters Patent No. 106,253,` dated August 9, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN' PRUNING-v-SIIIEARS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all u'hom tt may concern:
Beit known -that we, RANSOM BULLARD andGEoRGE E. MILLS, ofLitehield, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Pruning-Shears; and we do -hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construct-ion and operation of the same, reference being hadto the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to'the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawingis a side View of my iriven tion.
Figure 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
Our invention relates to means for pruning trees. and consists in the construction and arrangement ol devices as hereinafter described, and intended toserve as, useful and efficient shears for the purpose named.
A, of the drawing, represents a bar or standard, to the side of which is att-ached the curved arm 0r braeket B.
C represents a sliding bar, pivoted atits lower end to the lever D, and at its upper end to the arms G G of the shears, in the manner shown.
H is a staple, affixed to the standard A, and serves to hold the sliding bar in position.
The lever D is pivoted to the arm B and the sliding bar C, as shown, and serves as the lever by which the shears are operated. f
The lettere represents a metallic plate, rmly attached to the-standard.
It has a shoulder at c, that serves as a stop for the, upward movements of the sliding bar, and is grooved out, as shown at y, to provide for holding and operating the blades of the shears, as hereinafter mentioned.
N N represent the two blades of our shears.
They are formed, respectively, of curvedv edges, as shown at w, and are pivotedin the slot j] ofthe plate e. The lower ends of these blades are, respectively, pivoted to the arms G, as represented.
To operate our shears, the limb is grasped vby the curved edges ot' the blades, and the unattached end ot' the lever D forced downward.
If the limb to be out is situated at a great height, we sometimes operate the lever by a pitman or rod attached' to the end of lever D. In that case the shoulder or stop e aids efficiently in operating the shears.
We claim as our invention- The slotted metallic standard plate e, with shoulder c, the shearblades N N, arms G G, bar C, curved arm B, and lever D, all constructed and arranged as described.
In testimony that we claim the above, we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses. Y
