Letters Patent No. 106,245, dated August 9, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN 'I'UYERES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND Yonnes, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new Improvement in Tuyeres; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the same, 1eference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification. I
My invention relates to tuyeres, and consists in the relative construction of the cap and topplate, which will first be described in connection with those parts of a tuyere necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then fully specified in the summary or Figure 1 is avertical central section, and
Figure 2, a plan view of a tuyere with "my improvement applied thereto;
A is the air-chamber;
B, the bellows-tube; and
C, an inclined top-plate.
The plate 0 has an apelture on top to receive the hearth or cap, with recesses ff on opposite sides.
The cap I) is provided with lugs e e on opposite sides, which pass throughthe vertical recesses f f, atterj which the cap is turned, and thereby firmly fixed in its place on the plate 0.
'A projecting flange of the cap overlaps the plate 0 on top, and forms the annular surface that rests upon the tuyeres,-while at the same time it protects the joint between the cap and plate from ashes and dirt.
g is a series 'of perforations, which admit the air to the fire at a number of points simultaneously, and thus produce an equable, uniform, and hot fire.
The under-side'of the cap is dome-shaped, to save an unnecessary waste of metal, and to form a subsidiary air-chamber. This cap is cast in a single piece, and can be furnished at a very limited cost, while it possesses the great advantage of being readily detachable by simply turning the lugs c to coincide with the grooves f.
I am aware of the patent granted to 'John Theat, October 2, 1866, in which is described a perforated hearth, convex on its upper surface, with a flange projecting outward from its edge, and resting on the upper surface of the wall of tlieair-chamber, and with a set-screw for fastening-it to said walls and I disclaim all right to any invention described in said patent; but 7 lVhat I. do claim as my invention is- The construction of the recesses f in the annular plate 0, and the lugs e on the hearth D, as and for the purpose described.
EDMUND YOUNGS.
