DIVANETTE.
APPLICATION FILED 001?. 25, 1912.

JOHN F. nAmPE, or BROOKLYN, NEW .YORK.
' DIVANETTE.
- Specification of Letters latent.
Application filed October 25, 1912. Serial no. 727,734.
Be it known that I, JOHN F. KAMPE, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of-"New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Divanettes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of convertible couches or couchbeds termed in the trade divanettes, by reason of the fact-that they are usually about four feet long so as to take up the least possible space length-' wise and are made up of three sections each .nsually about two feet wideso that when opened up they will form a full 'length double bed, and in which, in one form thereof, they consist of a seat, and aback to form a divan and, as hereinbefore stated, when 0 ened up will form a full length ,bed, the .o ject of the invention being to provide an improved structure of this kind comparatively simple and easily operated and so organized thaton the swinging of one of the 1 parts or sections the structure will be donverted either into a divan. or a double bed.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end view of this improvedstructure in the form of a divan; Fig. 2 is likewise an end view of the structure partly open; and Fig.
3 is an end view of the structure opened to forin a double bed.-
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings. Q
In a brief way, the present improved I structure in its preferred form may-be, considered as made up of a air of swinging sections hinged to -a shi able or sliding middle section in such-manner that on the swinging of one of said swinging parts or sections in one direction the other swingin part or section willmove in the opposite d1- rection, while at the same time the middle section will be shifted so that the structure may be converted either into a divan or a double. bed, both of the said swinging sections having suitable means for supporting them when in the form of a double bed.
5'5 I tionary it may or'may not be provide with In the form shown this improved structure comprises a supporting frame 2, which may consist of a pair of suitably connected end frames 3, each consisting of a'horizontal supporting member and a pair of legs 4.
As this supporting frame'is normall stacasters as found most desirable in practice.
section and will comprise a pair of end cross;
Patented May 20, 1913.
members 12 suitably connected at their outer 1 ends by a side bar and pivoted at their inner ends to' the forward side of the middle section, and stretched between the cross bars of this section is a suitable spring or fabric 13. Hinged to the rear side or edge of the middle section is the rear swinging or back forming section 14, formedin substantially the same manner as the front swinging section and therefore carrying a sprin 15. This rear swinging section is linked by a pair of links 16, one at each end, to the supporting frame 2, and the end bars 17 supporting the spring-0f this swinging section are shown as prolonged below their pivotal connection with the middle section, as M318,
and these parts 18 are connected by links 19,
one at each end of the structure, with the front swinging section. Each of these links is provided at its forward end with a de-v pending portion 20 forming a leg or support for the front swinging section, and in the.
form shown the rear end of each of these connecting links is provided with .a'slot 21 adapted to, receive a headed pin or stud 22 carried by the part 18. This slot might be located at the forward'end, orin preference to either slot asomewhat diflferent'construction of this connecting link might be used as may be found desirable.
When the structure is in the form of a divan the front swinging section rests flatwise and horizontally over the top of the middle section, thereby forming a seat, while the rear swinging section forms the back. In practice the upper side of the front swinging-section, when the structure is in the form of a divan, may be suitably upholstered to give an ornamental appearance to thearticle, while the underside,
which forms the top when the front swinging section is in theform ofa double bed,
may be provided witha suitable mattress to be slept upon. The middle section will also be provided in practice with a suitable mattress and the back will be p'rovidedwith a suitable stuffed mattress preferably of ornamental form. r
The front swinging section is shown with its hinged ends somewhatcurved, as at 25, this curvature depending upon the thickness of the stufi'ed mattresses carried by the middle and front sections in order that the seat may be sufliciently level to be comfortable; The connecting link between the two swinging sections is shown connected with the supporting leg by suitable braces 26.
In operation the user; on grasping the front swinging section and swinging it upwardinto positio shown in Fig.2, simultaneously movesth back in the opposite direction, while atthe same time the middle or shiftable section is drawn'forward by reason of the linkage connections'between the supporting frame 2, the back and the .shlftable middle section and the linkage connection between the two swinging seci frame 2, which-atnotimetmoves, and at the same time the linkage. connection. between the two swinging' s'ect-ions carries the front legintopositionto support-the front swinging 'sectionj" Aflrevers'al-Tof this operation convertsjthe structure into a divan as shown in Fig.1. Thus it will be observed-that onswinging the front swinging section' 'in one direction the rear or back forming section will. be swung-in-"the opposite direction toconvert the structure either into a double bed or into a divan, and-that simultaneously" with theswinging of the front swinging section the middle section is shifted forward back instead of the frontswinging section,
although the structure; is much" more easily operated byshifting the-front swinging sect-ion,
1 reason of the present improvement it y i'wi'llbe observed that the structure is read il yy'converted into .a full-length doublebedwithout moving ordrawing the structure away from the wall againsawhich it ,may
be located; that is to say, the supporting; frame 4" is normally stationary and itis notnecessary in. order to .convert the structure into a double bed or to change. it back to a divan,.to' move the supporting frame away from the wall, which is a considerable ad- 'vantage in structures of this kind.
