HAT PASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED MAE. a. 1911.

ERNEST L. MCHENRY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAT-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 8, 1911.
Patented May 13, 1913. Serial No. 613,196.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EnNns'r L. MoI'InNnY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for securing hats in place upon the heads of the wearers, and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient structural formation and combination of parts in which a series of circularly disposed curved prongs, located within the interior of the hat body, are simultaneously projected into the hair of the wearer to secure the hat in place and resist in a very effective manner an upward uncovering movement of the hat during out door wear in windy weather, all as will here inafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1, is a perspective view of the present hat fastener. Fig. 2, is a fragmentary plan view, partly in section. Fig. 3, is an en larged detail vertical section on line a1m, Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents an inner fixed annulus or band provided with offset and orificed ears 2, by means or which the said annulus or band is stitched in place in the interior of the hat body. The annulus band is also provided with a series of guide lugs 3, in which the hereinafter described movable annulus or band has sliding movement, and in addition to the provision of the ears and lugs above described, the an nulus or band 1 is formed with a series of circularly disposed angular bends or knees 4, with each bend or knee consisting of an elongated portion and a contracted portion provided at their point of intersection with a guide orifice or passage for one of the curved hair engaging prongs hereinafter described.
6 is the movable annulus or band above referred to, and which has sliding movement in a curved path in the guide lugs 3 of the fixed annulus or band 1 above described.
7 is an operating rod secured at one end to the movable annulus or band 6, and provided at its other end with a push button 8,
or the like for convenient operation. Said operating rod passes through a side wall of the hat, so that its button carrying end will be at the exterior of the hat, and to this end the push button 8 is made removable, so that the rod may be passed through an orilice made therefor in the wall of the hat, after which the push button 8 is applied to the outer end of the push rod.
9 are the curved prongs of the present appliance, and which are pivoted at one end to the movable annulus or band 6, with their other and pointed ends having engagement in the before described orifices 5 of the angular bends or knees l, of the fixed annulus or band 1, to be guided thereby in the practical operation of the appliance. The angular bends or knees l, owing to their extended depth are adapted to provide very substantial supports for the intermediate portions of the prongs 9, to resist a tendency to upard tilting of said prongs when exposed to the stress of an upward uncovering movement of the hat in gusty weather. It is preferred that the extreme points of the prongs t) have engagement in guide channels 10, formed in the knees 4t and ending in the orifices 5, with a view to properly direct the points of said prongs into said orifices, after they have been unduly retracted by the operator.
In the practical construction of the applimice the respective fixed and movable annulus or bands 1 and (i, may be made to expand or contract so as to vary their diameters in the applieatimi of the same to hats of different sizes, and in such case the ends of the metal strips forming the fixed and movable annulus will be made to overlap, and be provided with elongated slots 11 and clanming screws 12, to connect the said ends together at the required adjustment.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A ladys hat fastener, comprising in combination a fixed annulus adapted to be socured in the interior of the hat, a movable annulus adapted to slide upon the fixed annulus, curved prongs pivotally connected to one annulus and lmving sliding and sup porting engagement with the other annulus by a series of integrally formed inset bends of an angular form in said other annulus and of a Width equal to said other annulus, nipulation of the same from the exterior of the inner or apex portion of each bend havthe hat. 10 ing a guiding and supporting orifice for the Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 6th day shank of one of the curved prongs aforesaid of March 1911.
to provide a support for the middle portion ERNEST L. MoI-IENRY. of said prongs against a movement of the Witnesses:
hat in Windy Weather, and an operating rod ROBERT BURNS,
connected to the movable annulus for ma- HENRY MOE.
