UMBRELLA-RUNNER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,216, dated July 16, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, GUSTAVUS J OSEPHS and ELLIS I. ONEILL, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrella- Runners, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

Our invention consists of the construction of an umbrella or parasol runner whereby the springs for holding the same are dispensed with.

To this end the runner is formed so as to be contracted and compressed against the umbrella-stick.

Figures 1, 2, and 3 are side elevations of an umbrellarunner embodying our invention. Fig. at represents a horizontal section thereof on line a a, Fig. 1.

Similar letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A represents an umbrella-runner, the same being formed of a sleeve of metal or other suitable material, divided or split in the direction of its length, whereby it may be contracted and expanded, and having on its ends lips B, through which is freely passed a slidingbar 1, which is formed with a cross-head 2, secured to or bearing against the outer side of one of thelips. Bearing against the outer side of the opposite lip is the head 3 of a lever I, said head being a cam or eccentric and said lever pivoted to the adjacent end of the bar.

Connected with one end of the runner is the disk 5, for attachment of the ribs of the umbrella, said disk in the present case being freely confined bet-ween flanges C on the runner, so as not to interfere with the contraction and expansion of the runner.

The operation is as follows: IVhen the umbrella is opened or closed and the runner reaches its position, the lever 4 is operated,

whereby, owing to the head 3 of said lever and head 2 of the bar or slide 1,the lips B are brought together, thus contracting the runner and clamping it firmly on the stick, holding the umbrella opened or closed, as the case may be. In order to release the runner, the lever is returned to its normal position, whereby the lips are released of the closing action of the heads 2 3. The runner is now permitted or caused to expand, and may be moved in order to close or open the umbrella, as is evident.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An umbrella-runner consisting of a divided or split band or sleeve andaclamp connected with the ends of said band or sleeve for contracting said ends, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.

2. An umbrella-runner divided and having lips on its ends, in combination with a slide engaging with one lip, and a lever pivoted to said slide having a cam or eccentric head, which latter engages with the other lip, substantially as described.

An umbrella-runner consisting of a divided band or sleeve, lips on the ends of the sleeve, and a clamping device carried by the lips for causing the contraction of the sleeve, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.

An umbrella-runner consisting of a divided band or sleeve, a rod or plate connected to one end of the sleeve and passing through the other end thereof, and a cam or eccentric pivoted to the rod and operating against one end of the sleeve to cause the contraction of the sleeve, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
