Description
Y' MILo HARK- Iscr iAMnsTowN, NEW YORK.
Letters Pate-nt No. 106,155, 1a-ted August 9, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT 1N HEMMER PoR- SEWING-MACHINE.
The Schedulxefexfred to in these Letters Patent and making part ci' the same To all whom it may concezln Be it known that I, MILo HARRIS, of Jamestown, m the county ot' Ohatanqna andState of New York,
` have invented a new and -nsefnl Improvement in Hemmers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will y enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw- 4' ing` forming part oi' this specification.`
lThis invention consists in t-he arrangement of a forming or guide-block, with a scroll-plate for turning thecdge of the goods to be hemmed, said block being provided with spiral ridges, as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved hemmer, partly sectioned;
Figure 2 is a side elevation; and
Figure 3 is a section on the line n: a; of fig 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
y A represents the supporting plate, and
B, the scroll-plate.
C is the former or gudinglbl-ock, which I propose to combine with the scroll-plate in the manner shown.` i Itis provided with spiral ridges on the top and the side next the termination aofthe scroll-groove. lhese ridges are pitched toward the said termination of the lgroove, and they, or the grooves between them, are
out or otherwise formed with especial reference to having the -edges so shaped that the fabric will slide over them t-o the bottom a freely, but will be held bythem against moving back. l
The fabric is drawn over l.this block by the feeder, and by the action of the presser-foot, with-considerable tension, so that the projections guide 'it downward to the bottom of' the groove.
The block is attachedigto the horizontal part of the scroll-plate O, near its termination, and forms the ter-A mination of the grooves,
By reason ot' the feeding vaction of this block I am enabled to make the space between it and the scrollplate B wider than could be done without it, so that heavy seams may be passed through it,`whichis articnlarlydesirable, especially when hem ming bias goods which have been seamed together. Having t-hns describedvmy invention, 'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patentrlhe block G, provided with spiral grooves or ridges, and arranged near the termination of the scroll-plate B, on the horizontal part of the same, as and for thepurpose specified.
\ MILO HARRIS. VVtnesses:
D. 1S. BRATT,
SIDNEY J omis.
