SAMUEL W. POTTS, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ENGLANDER SPRING BED COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
CONVERTIBLE DIVAN OR COUCH-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. Porrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Divans or Couch-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to convertible clivans or couch beds, more particularly to that class known as divanettes, in which the structure when in the form of a divan is usually about four feet long, whereby it does not take up very much space lengthwise thereof in a room, and which divan is formed of three sections each about two feet wide, so that when opened up the structure will be converted into a full length bed, the object of the present improvement being to provide a simple and comparatively inex pensive structure to make, and one which is easily operated, and comprising a stationary section and a pair of swinging sections, which swinging sections are shifted in opposite directions to form either a divan or a double bed on the manipulation of either of said swinging sections.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification Figure 1 is an end View of this improved convertible divanette; Fig. 2 is an end view showing the same partly opened; and Fig. 3 is an end View showing the same opened to form a double bed.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures of the drawings.
In the preferred form thereof this improved divanette comprises a stationary middle section 2 and a pair of swinging sections 3 and 4 hinged thereto. The stationary section may comprise a pair of end frames 5, each consisting of a cross-bar or member 6 and suitable braced legs 7 which may be provided with the usual form of casters, if desired. Stretched between the cross or end bars 6 is some suitable form of spring 8. Hinged to one, as for instance the rear side, is the back or back section 4, which comprises a pair of end bars 10 suit-ably connected by a lengthwise extending bar at their outer ends. The end bars are pivotally connected to the end frames of the station- .ary section 2, and as shown are provided with a pair of depending portions or members 11 forming levers for connection with the front swinging section in the manner hereinafter described. The end bars also carry a suitable spring. The front swinging section 3 likewise comprises a pair of end bars 12, for supporting a suitable spring, pivotally connected to the front edge or side of the stationary frame or section 2, and these end members are suitably connected at their outer ends by a lengthwise extending bar. Pivotally connected to the depending portions of the back at each end of the structure is a link 13 shown as of bent formation, so as not to project above the seat of the structure when in the form of a divau. Each link is provided with a slot 1% for the reception of a headed pin or stud carried by the front swinging section, and secured, or formed as a part of this link, at its forward end is a suitable leg or support 15 for the front swinging section this leg being connected with the link itself by a suitable brace 17. Pivotally secured to the back end bars, one at each end, is a leg or support which will fold into position to support the back when it is lowered, and will extend along the back ends when it is raised.
Any suitable form of stuffed mattress may be used, which, when the structure is in the form of a divan, may be on top of the swinging section 3 and when it is desired to convert the structure into a double bed this may be thrown up against the back to permit the structure to be opened, and then thrown over upon the stationary section and the front swinging section. The back of course, also will carry a stuffed mattress.
To transform the structure into a double bed the user simply grasps the front swingview of the construction, one continuous fabric or spring may be used for the middle and front swinging and back sections, this fabric being herein designated as 8.
I claim as my invention 1. A divanette comprlsing a stationary middle section, a spring fabric secured thereto and fixed against movement, whereby it is always normally maintained permanently level, a pair of swinging sections, each of which also has a similar spring, hinged to said stationary middle section, said swinging sections being movable in opposite directions whereby when fully opened they form with the stationary middle sec tion a full length bed, and means connecting said swinging sections so that on the shifting of one of them the other will be shifted, the spring of one of said swinging sections adapted to rest flatwise over the spring of the stationary middle section and form therewith the seat when the structure is in the form of a divan, and the other swinging section adapted to extend perpendicularly to form the back.
2. A divanette comprising a stationarymiddle section and a pair of swinging sections hinged thereto at opposite sides thereof, one forming the back and the other the seat when the structure is in the form of a divan, and movable in opposite directions to form a full length bed, and means connecting the two swinging sections together whereby on swinging one of them the other will be also swung, said means having a sliding connection with the front swinging section.
3. A divanette comprising a stationary middle section and a pair of swinging sections hinged thereto at opposite sides thereof, one forming the back and the other the seat when the structure is in the form of a divan, and shiftable in opposite directions to form a full length bed, and means connecting the two swinging sections together whereby on swinging one of them the other will be also swung, said means having a sliding connection with the front swinging section and also having a depending leg portion for supporting the front swinging section.
4:. A divanette comprising a stationary section, a back hinged thereto at one side and having a depending lever portion, a front swinging section hinged at the opposite side of said stationary section, a link connecting the depending portion of the back with said front swinging section, said swinging section and link having one a stud and the other a slot, and means carried by the structure for supporting the front swinging section when the structure is converted into a full length bed.
5. A divanette comprising a stationary section and back hinged thereto at one side and having a depending lever portion, a front swinging section hinged at the opposite side of said stationary section, a link connecting the depending portion of the back with said front swinging section, said swinging section and link having one a stud and the other a slot, and means for support- I ing the front swinging section when the structure is converted into a full length bed, said means being carried by said link.
6. A divanette comprisinga middle section, a back hinged thereto and having a depending portion and a front, section hinged to said middle section, and back being movable in opposite directions to convert the structure into a full length bed, and a link connecting the back with the front section, said link having, when the structure is in the form of a divan, a port-ion substantially parallel with the end of the structure and an inclined portion. I
7 A divanette comprising a middle section, a back hinged thereto and having a depending portion and a front section hinged to said middle section, said front and back being movable in opposite directions to convert the structure into a full length bed, and a link connecting the back with the front section, said link having, when the structure is in the form of a substantially parallel with structure and an inclined portion, and said said front divan, a portion' the end of the back having a depending portion connected with said link.
8. A divanette comprising a middle section, a back hinged thereto and having a depending portion and a front section hugged to said middle section, said front an tions to convert the structure into a full length bed, and a link connecting the back with the front section, said link having, when the structure is in theform of a divan, a portion substantially parallel with the end of the structure and an inclined portion,
and said link having at its forward end a depending portion adapted to form a support for the front section.
9. A divanette comprising a middle section, a back hinged thereto. and having a depending portion and a front section hinged to said middle section, said front and back back being movable in opposite direcbeing movable in opposite directions to coning a pin and slot connection with the front vert the structure into a full length bed, and section.
a link connecting the back With the front section, said link having, when the structure SAMUEL POTTS 5 is in the form of a divan, a portion sub- Witnesses:
