` 'lhe object of my invention'is the cleansing of soiled clothes by placing them "wit-hin a cylinder having' numel-ous openings, which cylinder is rotated within a vessel containing boiling water;` and The nature of my inventionconsists in the coni struction and arrangement, upon the periphery of said cylinder, of certain bucketsfor conveying waterr l from the boiler and discharging it upon the clothes to be cleansed.

i These buckets are iprovided with a series of small circular openings, c, arranged in line ii'om'one end to the other, and so placed as to let all the water out of said buckets at a point nearly over the top center of said cylinder.

The crank H, passes through the opposite central side of the boiler, and through a suitable bearing,f, secured to the inner side of the boiler at that point, into a boss, J, secured upon the center ofthe disk C'. Where theend h of thecrank enters the boss J, it is provided with a right-hand screw, which enters into corresponding screw-threads in said `Kloss. In turning the cylinder by this crank inthe proper direction for work,.the crank, by its screw, holds firmly into the boss; but, in` turning the cylinder in the opposite direction, the crank is unscrewed, and ceases to turn said cylinder.

The crank has a suitable handle, Kfproperly secured to it.`

The boiler is also provided with a suitable cover, L, and handles M. Y

In operation, the boiler is iilled about half full of water, and put over a fire, and the soiled clothes are placed loosely within the cylinder, so as to ll it. A suiicent quantity of soap should also be placed. in the boiler, and when the water boils, the cylinder should be rotated from left'to right.

The buckets, as they pass along near the bottom ot the boiler, scoopV themselves full oi' water, and, in passing over the top center of the cylinder, discharge it in a stream upon the clothes. y The clothes, by this con stant immersion of every part of them in turn in the boiling water, and by the constant stream of boiling water falling from the buckets and penetrating them,

. and' by the constant motion of them within the cylinder, are speedily and thoroughly cleansed. l.
