The crank H, passes through the opposite central side of the boiler, and through a suitable bearing,f, secured to the inner side of the boiler at that point, into a boss, J, secured upon the center ofthe disk C'. Where theend h of thecrank enters the boss J, it is provided with a right-hand screw, which enters into corresponding screw-threads in said `Kloss. In turning the cylinder by this crank inthe proper direction for work,.the crank, by its screw, holds firmly into the boss; but, in` turning the cylinder in the opposite direction, the crank is unscrewed, and ceases to turn said cylinder.
The crank has a suitable handle, Kfproperly secured to it.`

In operation, the boiler is iilled about half full of water, and put over a fire, and the soiled clothes are placed loosely within the cylinder, so as to ll it. A suiicent quantity of soap should also be placed. in the boiler, and when the water boils, the cylinder should be rotated from left'to right.
The buckets, as they pass along near the bottom ot the boiler, scoopV themselves full oi' water, and, in passing over the top center of the cylinder, discharge it in a stream upon the clothes. y The clothes, by this con stant immersion of every part of them in turn in the boiling water, and by the constant stream of boiling water falling from the buckets and penetrating them,
