MAILING FOLDER.

MAILING-FOLDER.
To all whom if may concern Be it ltnown that I a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in h'lailing-Folders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to folders made of cardboard which are distributed by mail for advertising purposes, and which are provided with a detachable portion used as a. mailing card to be returned to the sender. It is necessary that the relatively movable parts or flaps of such device shall be secured together'to make a rigid package, and so as to prevent the overlapping portions from If the latter takes place certain portions. including address or stamp m'tiy become detached and the folder thereby fall of delivery. The securement of these parts together has usually been done by the use of ties, bands or metallic clips. The latter, however, are particularly objectionable. as they have been known to de' stroy the dies of stamp canceling machines, and the use thereof is not satisfactory to the postofii e authorities.
My invention provides means by which the integral portions of the used to secure the outer Hap. It is so designed as to insure the address always being printed or written in the proper place with the minimum of'tiine and maximum of speed either by hand or machine. It in cludes a detachable return which is a part of the folder, and so related to the other parts thereof that the recipient is saved the trouble of signing, or addressing the return postcard, the original mailing address becoming a {ire-signature when detached. As the card is also provided with a return address, it only remains for the person receiving the same to write the message and post the detached card.
The principles of my invention are illustrated in the drawings, in'which l 12 are 3 proved mailing card when partially open:
Fig. 2 shows the same when closed: :3 I is a reverse iewof Fig. 1. the same being turned end for end; Fig. l shows the card illustrated in Fig. 1 as laid flat before fold ing; Fig. 5 represents a somewhat modified form of the card as shown in Fig. 1.

acters of reference denote like parts throughout: 1 is the hotly porti 3 the inner flap, and 3 the outer fin J of my improved mailing card. One end oi the same. including the right hand lower portion. upon which the address should properly be placed, should be partially separated from the remainder of said flap by a line 4 of perforations or scored by a cutting rule. as well as on the line indicated by 5. The said part i? should carry on the iside the address of the sender, while the other side may be in any form desired. but having a blank space at the po tion adjacent to line 5 upon which the ari nal mailing address is entered as shown at 7 in Fig. 3. tongue 8 may he forn'ied by cutting through the fiap 2 on the lines 57-. it). and 11. thereby allowing the said tongue 3 to spring" outwardly on the uncut line 172. This tongue obviates the here ty of using clips. thus cutting down the cost of the lin ished product. It forms: a stop whereby the flap 3 is not permitted to go beyond tile normal portion appi'o 'n-iaterl to the prc signature address. and where the edge of the tongue coincides with the dotted line 4 the postcard section is much easier to oetach as the edge cut clear through instead of being merely scored or perforated.
'hen the device is provided ith the desired printed matter. the mailing: address is inserted in the proper position as above described. the lower flap is folded upon the line 5: the upper flap is folded down thereon on the line 3. and the edge 3" in inserted "nder the tongue 8 with the same motion. This renders the folder ready for addressing: and mailing with two folding operations where three or more a re required when the folder is clipped or otherwise secured. The oblong l space bounded by the lines it. I, 1" and "L as 1 shown in Fig. '2. lltllllll be almost identical I in size with the ordinary addressing machine. stencil with which sin-h folders are largely addresed. Such quadrilateral being clearly defined insures tlie address being put exactly in the right place on the lower portion of the car l. If this space is not so outlined the operation of thraddrcssing machine very often allow the addrrss t he printed partially on the postard and par lially over the edge. whereby th address signature is mutilated or destro ed when dclIl('ll((l.

4', and t3 are of a form identical to that set forth in the preferred construction by the following numerals respectively 1, 2, 3, 3 3'', r, 5, 5, and 6. Said modified construction only (litters in that the member e thereof is at a point within the flap 2 somewhat removed from the scoring 4; whereas in the preferred construction, it borders upon the scoring 4. The operation of both constructions herein described are identical.
I claim:
1. A mailing folder comprising a body portion. an inner flap and an outer flap, said inner flap having one end scored its entire width to provide a detachable postcard and also provided with an integrally formed rectangular longitudinally extending member curfree at one edge on the line of said scoring and also cut free at two of its other edges and adapted to resiliently engage the lower edge of said outer flap.
2. A inailin folder com )risiiw-a bodv c l D r portionoan inner flap. an outer tiap, said inner fia p ha vinp a scoring at one end forming a. portion adapted to be. detached and provided with a return address on the inside thereof, a space. upon the other side of said portion adapted for receiving a sending ad v gage the lower edge of said outer flap.
In witnese whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name, this 25th day of April A. D. 1912, in the presence oi two subscribing witnesses. i
