COMBINED LETTER-SHEET AND ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1919.
Application filed April 3, 1918. Serial No. 226,513.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE L. TAGGART,
a citizen of the United States, residing at mails, and which envelop is of such formation as to be readily opened without requiring the use of any implement and without endangering the contents or resultlng in injury thereto.
Specifically considered, the invention has for its object to provide a combined envelop and letter sheet which constitute parts of the same blank, the latter having sealing tabs which may be gunnned or made secure by folding and tucking one tab over the other. l
The invention also has for its object to provide simple means whereby a return notice may be prominently displayed and whereby the address and the name may be written at one and the same operatlon and in proper position, both upon the envelop section and the opening portion of the letter sheet.
The invention furthermore provides a combined envelop and letter sheet which is adapted to be folded in a variety of ways and which embodies sealing tabs disposed in such relation as not to add materially to the cost of the usual letter sheet and which is considerably less than the combined cost of a letter sheet and envelop.
The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, however, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, construction, and operation of the device may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a detail view of the blank from which the combined letter sheet and envelop is formed.
Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the manner of tucking in the last fold.
Fig. 3 1s a detail view showing the manner of providing the address on the envelop and the superscription on the letter sheet.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a modification.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The combined letter sheet and envelop is formed from a blank substantially as shown in Fig. l and which is adapted to be folded in a manner substantially as indicated by the broken lines. The blank is preferably of oblong or rectangular shape and is provided at one end with a plurality of tabs 1, 2, and 3 which are separated from the body of the blank or sheet by a line of perforations as indicated at w-a. This perforated line (Ix-411 may be provided in, any manner, the purpose being to facilitate the separation of the tabs when it is required to open the envelop by the person to whom the same is addressed. The blank sheet is adaptedto be folded on the transverse lines bb and 0-0 and on the longitudinal lines d0l and eo. The tabs 1 and 3 are of a length corresponding to the width of the sections comprised between the outer edges of the blank and the adjacent lines of fold represented by dcl and ee. These tabs 1 and 3 are gummecl so as to efl'ectually seal the sheet when folded into the form substantially as indicated in Fig. 2. The middle tab 2 is somewhat longer than the tabs 1 and 3, i. 6., it projects from the blank to a greater extent and the portion projecting beyond the tabs 1 and 3 is adapted to receive the address of the sender so that in the event of non-delivery of the envelop or package it may be returned to the addresser. This middle tab is not gummed, but the tabs 1 and 3 are secured thereto by the gum or adhesive applied thereto, whereby the envelop is sealed.
In accordance with the present invention, the upper left hand corner portion of the letter sheet or blank is folded upon the main body of the blank as indicated in Fig. 3, and a carbon sheet 4 is interposed between the folded corner portion and the body of the sheet. The address is written or otherwise provided upon the folded corner portion as indicated, and by reason of the interposition of the carbon sheet l between it and the body of the sheet, the latter has the superscription written thereon simultaneously with the address. This insures agreement of the address and superscription and prevents any possible mistake such as frequently arises where the envelop and letter 5 sheets are separated and distinct parts.
After the message or other matter has been written or inscribed upon the letter sheet, the same is folded first upon the line 6-4), then upon the line c0 after which H 10 the folded sheet is again folded along the scribed upon the projecting portion of the tab 2. The addressee or party receiving the package opens the same readily and with despatch by simply tearing off the tabs 1, 2,
and 3 along the weakened or perforated line a.a and this may be easily accomplished because of the weakened line.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the
sheet or blank may be of any size and is provided at one end with tabs correspondin to those indicated in Fig. 1. The side ta s 1 and 3, however, are devoid of gum or other adhesive since it is not the intention to seal the envelop in a permanent manner, but to fasten the same temporarily so that the postmaster may make a proper inspection as provided for second and third class matter. The tab I is of a length equal to the middle tab 2 and when the sheet or blank is folded, the tab 1 is folded over the tab 3 and its outer end extends so as to be readily grasped when it is required to open the envelop to admit of an inspection thereof.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove eX- pedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A combined letter sheet and envelop, comprising a blank sheet having a middle and side tabs at oneend and foldable transversely and longitudinally, the longitudinal folds coinciding with the spaces betwcen the tabs, the side tabs being of less length than the middle tab, the projecting portion, of the, latter bearingv printed matter, the several tabs being foldable on one another and gummed for attachment and separated from the body of the sheet by a straight line of perforations.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
