Description

PATBNTED AUG. 7, 1906. J. T. H. MITCHELL. COMBINED ILLUSTRATED LETTER AND INCLOSURE APPLIOATION FILED SEPT.Z9,1905.
wig/225?? UNITED @TATES JOHN T. H. MITCHELL,
horsemen ILLUSTRATED T0 in whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN T. H. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combination Illustrated Letter and Inclosure, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. I
My invention relates to letters, and especially to that class of letters wherein the writing or letter part proper is on one side of the sheet and the address and stamp on the other side, the letter being folded so as to conceal the writing.
The object of the invention is to arrange for sending a return instrument, such as a return postal card, with a letter of this kind, so that it will not become detached and separated from the letter during transmisslon and also so that it will not interfere with the writing nor be unduly expensive.
In carrying out my invention in the man ner herein set forth hprovide the bottom portion of a letter of the above character with a crosswise slit or slot and insert a return postal card through the same and then foldthe sheet composing the letter so that the bottom part is folded over the middle and then the top part over the bottom part, whereby the bottom, with its contained postal card, is covered by the upper fold of the sheet. The folds are then secured in position by some suitable fastening device-as, for example, a aster or stickerwhich is pasted over the es edge of the upper folded portion.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a letter embodying my present invention in an open condition. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same in a closed condition, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
In the drawings I show a sheet 1 of paper, on one side of which is the writing forming the communication of the letter, as shown in Fig.
1. Near theliottom of this sheet is a GlOsswise slot 2,.and into this is inserted a postal card 3, as shown in said figure. This card 18 a return postal to be mailed to the party Specification of Letters Patent.

sending the letter and to such end is desirably providedwith the address of the letter sender. The party receiving the letter and postal can write on the back of it some suitmation or statement, as the case may be. The letter is then folded by first folding the bottom portion of the sheet 1 over the middle portion and then folding the top portion over the bottom portion, so that the sheet assumes the condition shown in Fig. 2. A sticker or pastor 4 is pasted over the free edge of the top portion of the sheet, so as to hold the same down, and thereby, inefiect, close or seal the letter. In this way the postal card 3 is ter, the slot 2 holding it against sidewise or crosswise movement and the upper foldeddown portion of the letter holding it against sliding out. The party receiving the letter will open and read the same and then withdraw the postal 3 and return the same with a suitable communication on it. Thus it will be seen that I provide a simple and practical arrangement of return postal which can be used with a letter, thereby giving all the advantage of a long communication, and at the same time the postal is securely held against separation or detachment from the letter in transmission and can be easily removed or detached by the party receiving the letter.
The above arrangement is especially advantageous where the letter is in the form of a printed advertising-letter, and the postal is provided with suitable inscriptions requesting the sender of the letter tocall or to send sample goods, in which case the receiver of the letter need only sign his name to the postal and mail the same.
It will be understood, of course, that the postal 3 can. be any suitable return instrument. It need not, however, be specifically a return instrument, but can be a means of communication with; some other party other than the sender of the letter.
modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is- 1. A device of the class specified, comprising a folded letter having its bottom provided able reply to the letter or some brief inforlsecurely held against separation from the let- It will be understood that changes and Withacross-slot, apostelinsertedinsaid slot, In Witness whereof I hereunfio subscribe and a fastenmg device holding said letter in my name this 25th day of September, A.
