PEN-POINT RELEASER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1913.
Application filed June 1, 1912. Serial No. 701,013.
Z '0 all whom 2'25 may concern Be it known that 1, ANDREW ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bingham Canyon, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penloint Releasers of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to pen holders and has for its object the production of an e'llicient pen-point-retaining-clamp and means for holding said clamp in engagement with said holder.
Another object of this invention is the production of a pen holder provided with a retaining-socket adapted to hold the penpoint-retaining-clamp in engagement with said holder.
\Vith these and other obj ect-s in view this invention consists in certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing the casing in section. Fig. 2 is a central, longitudinal section of the device. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33, of Fig. 1. Fig. is a section on line tt, of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the pen holder. Fig. 6 is a view which discloses the spring which partially encircles the coil spring.
Referring to the accompanying drawings 1 designates a pen holder which is provided with a pen-point-retaining-clamp-receivingsocket 2 in which the pen-point-retainingclamp 3 fits. The receiving-socket 2 is provided with the abutting shoulder 4:, which is adapted to prevent any longitudinal movement of the pen-point-retaining-clamp 3 after the same has been placed within the receiving-socket 2. The outer end of the pen holder 1 is provided with the upstanding portion 5. This upstanding portion 5 is provided with a reduced port-ion 6 adapted to receive the pen-point-retaining band or collar 7. Centrally located upon the upper face of the upstanding portion 5 is positioned a pen-point-retaining-rib 8. It will be seen that by use of a pen-point-retainingcollar and the pen-point-retaining-rib the pen is held in a firm engagement with the holder independently of the pen-point-retaming-clamp. Positioned upon the inner end of the receiving-socket 2 is a shoulder 9, which is adapted to limit the inward movement of the pen-point-retaining-clamp 3 and to act as a supporting means for the metallic casing 10.
A pen-point-retaining-clamp S is positioned within the receiving-socket 2 and is composed of a plurality of clamping portions 11. The clamping portions 11 are provided on their outer ends with the laterally extending gripping jaws 12, which rest against the shoulder 4. It will be seen that when the clamp is. in this position these gripping jaws prevent the retaining-clamp from coming out as well as forming an eflicient means for retaining the pen point. The clamping portions 11 are pivotally mounted upon the journal pin 13 and are adapted to be operated by means of the operating lug 14, which passes through the aperture 15 formed in the casing 10. A coil spring 16 is carried by the journal pin 13 and normally holds the gripping jaws 12 in engagement with the penpoint 17. Positioned on the inner side of the penpoint-retaining-clamp is a secondary flat spring 18, which partially encircles the coil spring 16 and forms a secondary spring member. Positioned near the outer end of the pen-point-retaining-clamp are a plurality of pen-point-engaging pads 19. It will be seen that if the edges of the gripping jaws should become worn the clamping portions will hold the pads 19 in engagement with the pen point and in this manner form a gripping means independently of the gripping jaws. A metallic casing 10 is positioned upon the lower end of the pen holder 1 and is especially adapted to hold the pen-point-retaining-clamp 3 in its correct position in the receiving-socket 2.
By referring to Fig. 5 it will be seen that the pen holder is provided with a receivingsocket adapted to hold the pen-point-retainmg-clamp in such a position as to eliminate any longitudinal movement thereof as well as the production of an efficient gripping means to cooperate with the retainingclamp. It is further obvious that the retaining-clamp is of a very simple construction and is provided with a primary and secondary gripping means formed near its outer end.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new, is
A pen holder of the class described, provided near its outer end With a longitudinally extending receiving-socket, an upstanding portion formed adjacent said receiving-socket, said upstanding portion provided With a pen-point retaining rib, a reduced portion formed upon the outer end of said upstanding portion, a collar carried by said reduced end, a pen-point-retaining-clalnp mounted Within said receiving-socket, said retaining-clamp comprising a plurality of clamping portions, the outer ends of Which are bent to form laterally extending gripping jaws abutting against the inner face of said upstanding portion and adapted to prevent any longitudinal movement of the retaining-clamp, pen-point-engaging-pads positioned Within said clamping portions and adapted to hold the pen point in its correct position independently of the gripping jaws, a journal pin carried by said retaining -clamp, a coil spring mounted upon said journal pin and adapted to hold the outer end of said retainingclainp in a closed position, a secondary flat spring carried Within said retaining-clamp and partially encircling said coil spring, an operating lug carried by one portion of said retainingclamp, said lug being adapt ed to compress the inner portions of said retaining-clamp when it is desired to eject the pen point, and a casing carried by the outer end of said pen holder, said casing being adapted to hold the retaining-clamp in its correct position in the receiving-socket.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
ANDREXV ANDERSON.
