UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIGE.
DANIEL H. STOEHR, OE OAK PARK, ILLINOIS.
specification of'Lemrs Patent.
Patent-ed Apr. 29, 1913.
Application filed August 1, 1912. Serial No. 712,658.
To all 'zr/10m it 'may conc-ern Be it known that I, DANIEL H. STOEHB, a citizen of. the United States, residing yat Oak Park, in the county of Gook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvemen'. in Port-able Electric Lights, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of 'this specification. Y
The object of my invention -is to produce aosimple, .eiiicient and inexpensive portable electric light, of symmetrical and pleasing design and appearance, for use upon tables, stands and the like, -or ornamental as well as illuminating purposes. Its novelty will be hereinafter set fort-h "1d particularly' pointed out in my claims.
In theaccompanying drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of the structure embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a middle vertical section thereof.
The same letters of reference are used to indicate corresponding parts in the two views.
My invention consists, primarily, in the combination of the base A, preferably made of metal, and the one-piece or integral supporting column B and shade C, formed of glass. The base A I preferably form of thin sheet metal, such as brass, stamped or spun into suitable shape, including a deep annular groove a for the reception of the vertical or cylindrical lower end of the gllss r is cylindrical lower -end of the column B is of sufficient length, and the groove in which it fits of corresponding depth, to securely support and hold the shade structure B--C up'on and within the base, without any additional fastening means, thus reducing the base and shade support and shade to two single elements, and forming a two-piece structure of the utmost simplicity andV corresponding economy of manufact-ure.
The base A is provided in the center of its top with an opening through which the wires for the electric lamp D are led, such opening 1n the present instance being formed by providing said base with a vertically extending tubular boss rl upon which is adjustably supported the lamp socket E, which may be secure-d in its differentadjusted positions by the set screw e. The wires F in the present instance are led to the lamp through the left-hand side of the base A in the views shown in the drawing, and the current is controlled by a. switch G at the opposite side of the base.
As will be understood from the foregoing description, I have produced a portable elect-ric light structure of great simplicity and corresponding economy of manufacture, in which the base and the shade and its support comprisebut two single element-s, and in which the shade and its support are held to the base with ample se# curity but'may at the same time be readily removed therefrom by simply lifting them vertically, when it is desired to gain access to the lamp within the shade or to remove the latter for cleansing or otherwise. The complete structure is also of symmetrical and ornamental design., and the single, electric lamp (or a. plurality similarly located) illuminates both the shade and its support,
thus producing a pleasing and ornamental effect.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent is.
l. The herein described two-piece p'ortable electric light structure, comprising a base provided with engaging means spaced inside its periphery and equipped with an upwardly projecting electric lamp connection. and a one-piece vitreous member forming the shade and a supporting stem therefor, said stem being of less diameter than t-he shade and at its lower end adapted to engage the base, and the illuminating portion of the electric lamp being arranged intermediate the ends of the vitreous member at a point a substantial distance above the plane of the base.
2. The herein described two-piece portable electric light structure, comprising a sheet metal base formed with'a circular seat and equipped with an upwardly projecting being arranged intermediate the ends of the electric lamp connection, and a, one-piece vitreous member at a point a substantial vitreous member forming a,sha.f1e.of. greater distance yabove the planeof thebase. diameter than the base Vand" a. supporting DANIEL H. S'QEHR.
5 stem therefor, seid stem being at lts lower Witnesses:
end adapted to seat uponsaidbase, and. the EDWARD RECTOR, illuminating portion of the electric lamp ROBERT DOBBERMAN.
