` The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of `the same.

Be it known that I,`DANInn Bnov, of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State oi' Illnois,have invented a'new and valuable Improvement in Washingi Machines; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and .operation ot' the s ame, reference being had to theannexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters andflgures of' reference marked thereon,

-My invention relates tocwashing-machines, and consists i a novel arrangement of devices, intended to` serve ras a valuable apparatus forthe purpose named.` p C ,i

' A. of the drawing represents a quadrangular box, arranged upon legs, in such manner that one end shall be lower` than the other, as shown, and havingQslots formed inthe top of itsside boards, to serre as bearings forthe gudgeons of the \vashing-wl1eel.

This frame C, with its slats attached, is not allowed `to rest upon the bottom ofbox A, but, by means of *its pivot pins and thevspring I), itis held abovesaid bottom, as shown, and thereby adapted for springing downward wheneverthe washing process shall require it, as mentioned hereafter. `I

i In one of the slats of this wheel I form two slots,

`in which I pivot the buttons a a', and extend arms c downward from said slot, and pivot lthe lower ends of said-arms to the ends of the wheel, respectively;

The slat above mentioned is marked G ou the drawinof. y "tithe object gained by the` pivoting the downward arms ot' said slat, is as follows, to wit: -Whenever it becomes necessary to give any particular garment, or `portion of a garment, an unusual'amount of rubbing, I place said garment or portion thereof between said pivoted Slat and the one next adjoining, and then, by turning the buttonsa., I hold it se'rcurely in place until I deem'it sufficiently washed by the rotating movements of the wheel `E,'acting upon and against the yielding frame O. One of the gudgeons of the wheel E isextended, and bent into the form of a crank.'

H represents a slotted, block, fastened to the sideboard of the box by apiu that passes through its slot at s, and by the. supporting-block u, arranged at an obtuse angle therewith, as shown. The gudgeon of 'the block-.passes through the end of bloeklEI.-

The letter K-represents a spring, attached to the side of the box, with its upper end resting upon the head of block H.

This spring is held in place byimeans of its pivot. the block y, arranged as represented in pinl v,- and iig. 2.

The object gained by the arrangement of the block H, pin and slot s, supporting-block u, spring lo, with.

'Ihe washing-machine herein described, having box A, wheelV E, frame 0, block H with its slot s, springs K, and blocks u. and y, whenconstructed and arranged substantially asspecitied.
