Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed December 28, 1912. Serial N 0. 739,106.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WVilliam H. MGGARRY, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to folding beds and has for its object the production of a simple and efiicient frame for a folding bed which may be readily folded so as to be conveniently shipped from place to place.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and eflicient folding bed which may be folded conveniently up against the wall so as to be out of the Way when not in use.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in general of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the framework which is adapted to support the bed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the framework showing the manner in which the sameis folded as illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken through a portion of the framework showing the manner in which the brace rods for the front of the frame are connected thereto. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the top rail of the structure'as illustrated in Fig. 1 showing one of the side rails in elevation. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the upper end of the frame for the bed showing a shelf connected thereto. Fig. 6 is a perspective of a slightly modified form of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a central sectional View through still another embodiment of the invention wherein the supporting frame for the bed is separate from the overhanging shield shelf. Fig. 8 is a front view of the device illustrated in Fig. 7.
By referring to thedrawings by numerals, it will be seen that l designates the supporting standard which standard comprises a wide base 2 having a centrally arranged laterally extending web 3 provided with a widened foot 4 for securing the standard 1 to the floor. A pair of these standards are employed in connection with each bed frame and each standard is provided at its upper end with an aperture 5 for receiving the supporting pin 6 of the front brace rod A slot 8 is formed upon the bottom of each base for receiving the forwardly extending angle end 9 of the rear standard frame 10. This angle end 9 extends under the standard 1 in such a manner as to firmly hold the rear standard frame 10 in firm engagement with the base. Each of the stand ard frames 10 is provided with an angle upper end 11 which is pivotally secured to one of the flange portions of the frame 10 by means of a pivot pin 12 as illustrated clearly in Figs. 1 and 4. A transversely extending brace member 13 is secured to the angle ends 11 for connecting the same together, and these ends are provided with depending lip portions 14 for constituting pivot portions for connecting the angle end 11 to the rear standard 10. A bracket 15 is supported upon each standard 10 and to these brackets 15 is connected a transversely extending auxiliary brace rod 16. A pair of converging brace members 17 are also connected to the opposite standards 10 and have their upper ends engaging the transversely extending brace member 13 as illustrated in Fig. 1. For the purpose of allowing the framework to fold, the forward braces 7 are connected to the angle ends 11 by means of the links 18. These links are pivotally connected to the forwardly extending portion 19 of the angle ends 11 as illustrated in Fig. 1, and have their lower ends pivotally connected to the upper end 20 of the rod 7. The link 18 is provided with a flattened end 21 so as to allow the link to readily swing to the desired position upon the forwardly extending end 19 of the angle ends 11. Of course, it should be understood that the brace rods 7 are so connected to the standards 1 as to allow the same to be detached therefrom and the braces 17 and brace 16 are also connected to the framework in such a manner as to allow the same to be detached whereby the upper ends 11 may be folded in a position as shown in Fig. 2 to allow the back braces 10 to lie parallel to each other and at right angles to the end 11 when in a folded condition.
In Fig. 6 I have shown an embodiment of my invention which is provided with a forward brace arm 22 which brace arm is directly pivotally connected to the upper angle end 23 of the rear brace frame 10. The upper end of the rear brace frame 10 is not connected to the main portion of the rear brace frame as is illustrated in Fig. l. The upper ends of the rear brace frame 10 are connected by means of a transversely extending angle brace member 13 andthis member is also braced by means of converging braces 17; i
As is illustrated in Figs, 7, 8, the bed 448. may be supported upon the standard 44 by means of the armsi5 and this bed carries at its forward end aplurality of supporting; legs 46 which legs areconneeted to the standard 4A by means of the pivot link 4:? to allow the legs L6 tovbe folded inwardly as the bed is raised to the position! shown in Fig. 7. A retaining rail 48 is carried by the bed so as to. retain the mattress thereon, and a retaining back 49- is also employed for supporting the mattress when; the bed is thrown: in its,
fol'dedcondition. A plurality of angle-brackets 5.0v are supported upon the wall adjacent the bed as illustrated in Fig. 7 and this. bracket. is provided with a downwardly extending brace 51'. A transversely extending member 52 has its ends supported by these braces 51 and is adaptedto engage the mattress 53 and hold the same in engage--- ment with the bottom of the bed when the bed; is swung to a vertical position, as illustrated. in Fig; 7. A shelf 5%, as illustrated in Figs. 5,7,, 8, is carried. by the upper end of the brackets 50 from which may be suspend-- ed a drapery or other hangings. A; rod: 55 is. carried by the bot-tom ofthe bed to allow the same to be gripped for swinging the bed to itsoperative position. This plate 54: may be so formed as to be provided with a depending flange portion 56- for facilitating the fastening of the plate 54 in engagement with the wall by passing securing means through the longitudinally extending slots 57. formed therein.
As is illustrated in Fig. 8, the mattress or spring may be supported upon: a pair of cross bars 58 whichz bars are connected by means of a connecting rivet 59. The outer ends-of these rods 58 are connected by means of transversely extending tie members 60 and these tie members have their ends con-- nectedto the main frame of the bed bottom by means of coil springs 61. The springs 61 are connected to aflat springbar Get and this bar is supported upon a pair of clampingplates 65.
Fromv the foregoing description, it will be seen. that a, very eflici'ent support has been produced for holding the mattress in engagement with the-frame-when thedevice is swung to a vertical position as illustrated in Fig. 7. 60'
Having thus described the invention, what is. claimed as new, is
1. A frame for supporting a folding bed comprising a plurality of standards, a pair of rear standards, angle ends pivotally car- 65 hers. and to said angle ends for facilitating the folding of said angle ends at right angles to; said rear standards;
2;. Aframe for a folding bed: comprising a plurality of standards, a plurality of angle members provided with forwardly extending ends engaging said standards, angle ends pivotally secured to the upper ends of said angle members, a detachable beam connecting said pivot angle ends, aforward brace arm carried by each standard, a link connecting: said forward brace arm to said pivoted angle ends, and: brace arms detachably secured to= said detachable beam and secured 7 to; said angle members for constituting a brace therefor;
3.. A frame for a folding bed comprising a standard, an angle member provided with end engaging said standard, a pivoted angle end connected to the-upper end of said angle member, a forward brace member secured to said standard and provided'with an inturned 7 end extending at right angles to'the pivoted angle end, and a link pivotally connecting said inwardly extending ends to said pivoted angle end for allowing said frame to-be folded.
4. A frame for a folding bed comprising. a plurality of standards,. a1 plurality of angle members provided with forwardly extending lower ends engaging said standards,each angle member providedv with a forwardly extending; upper end, a detachable connecting member'engaging the upper ends of said vertically extending: members, converging braces engaging said connecting member and engaging said vertically extending members, and a forward: brace engaging each forwardly extending: upper end for constitutiing, a brace therefor.
In: testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
