FOLKE W. WESTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO F. WESEL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
REGISTER-HOOK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FoLKn WV. Wns'ron, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of, the borough of Brooklyn of the city of New York, in the State of'New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Register-Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
The invention relates to printers plate holding means.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a construction which will be simple, compact, e'flicient, strong and powerful.
Another object of the invention is to devise a construction comprising in combination a base member having at least a slotted portion provided with series of teeth arranged along the slotted portion, a movable plate engaging hook carrying member provided with an ear or ears which enter the slotted portion of the base and a screw operating member for causing the plate engaging member to be moved along said slotted portion. The screw member is arranged to mesh with the teeth above referred to and has end engagement with the ear or ears. This screw is actuated by a member which extends between one of the ears and the screw and which member engages one end of the screw.
The improvements will be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section of a hook embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the same in transverse section, the plane of the section being indicatedby the line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view partly broken away, and, Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the screw or adjusting member.
The register hook illustrated in the accompanying drawings is of the form or type shown and described in my application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 452,789, filed September 12, 1908, which form or type is not compulsory so far as the present invention is concerned but simply illustrative thereof. In this hook the base or block is yokeshaped being provided with arms 6 which embrace the traveling member or clamp a, said arms forming therebetween an elongated opening or slotted portion. ter is preferably I-shaped in cross section or end elevation (Fig. 2) being, as it is, provided with extended bearing faces above and below which travel upon the top and bottom faces respectively of the side arms 6 as the member a is advanced and retracted. The vertical members or ears of the clamp a have journaled therein or therebetween the adjusting or propelling member 0 which in the present case is a longitudinally extending screw engaging threads or teeth in the side members 6, the latter being preferably solid throughout so as to form a strong and massive hook. The screw is provided at one end with a bearing (Z which may fit loosely in the vertical member of the clamp a (Fig. 2), and at the other end with a head or disk f (Figs. 1 and 5) which has intersecting grooves in its outer face for engagement therewith of a hand operating member or tool g, as illustrated, to turn the screw. 7
From an inspection of the drawings it will be noted that the base 6 is provided with slotted portion having at each side thereof a longitudinally of the slotted portion and that the screw member has end engagement with the vertically extending member or cars of the plate clamping or hook carrying It will furthermore be noted ber 9 passes through the opening in the hook carrying member a and extends between one of the vertically extending members or ears and the screw so as to engage the latter to actuate the same.
The jaw b is set well back upon the member a in order that it may be clamped over the edge of a plate and leave a very small margin. Such aw consists of two parts, one on one side of the clamp and the other on the other side, while between the jaws 1s an opening I) in the upper face of the member a, through which the hand operating member or tool 9 may be inserted to reach the head of the screw, said opening being in substantially the same plane as the head.
Besides being undercut upon the forward edge so as to overhang the plate, the jaw 72 is also undercut along its rear edge (Fig. 1). Moreover, the whole clamping member a is symmetrical so that it may be reversed,
thus presenting the rear edge of the jaw in position for clamping a plate. The rear edge of the jaw, as will be seen, is relatively near the end of the clamping member, so that it may be moved much nearer the forward end of the clamp than the forward edge of the jaw, and thus the reversibility of this member increases the adaptability or utility of the hook as was stated herein before.
It will be understood that various embodiments may be had of the present improvements, and hence the invention is not limited to the form or type of hook or to the features of construction shown and described herein.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a base having an elongated opening provided with teeth on the opposite sides thereof, a longitudinally movable member having a plate engaging jaw and spaced ears entering the elongated opening between the teeth and a screw member of a proper size and shape for the outer portions thereof to engage said teeth, said ears being located at the ends of the traveling member and the screw member being located endwise therebetween, said movable member being provided with an opening for an operating member or tool which when in the opening is between one of the ears and the screw member and engages one end of the latter.
2. In a register hook, the combination with the base or block of a traveling member provided with ears, screw means located between said ears to move the traveling member longitudinally, said traveling member having an upper face with a transverse elongated opening therein to provide access for a tool which is to engage between the ears the screw means for operating the same and also to permit a swinging movement of the tool when it is operating the screw means, and a jaw on the traveling member to engage a plate, the screw means being carried by the ears and movable longitudinally with the traveling member, the ears being arranged longitudinally relative to the screw.
3. The combination of a base having a slotted portion the side walls of which are provided with sections of screw threads, and a traveling member provided with a jaw to engage a plate and vertically extending ears at the opposite ends of the traveling memher which ears enter the slotted portion, said ears having therebetween a longitudinally extending screw operating member which engages the sections of screw threads in the walls and an opening through the top of the traveling member through which means for causing the movement of the screw operating member passes, said means engaging the screw operating member between the ears which are located at the extremities of the screw operating means.
. 4. The combination of a base having an elongated opening therein provided with screw threaded sectlons, a clamplng member having ears entering said opening, a longitudinally extending operating screw engaging the screw threaded sections of the base and a longitudinally extending bearing, said screw located between the ears which are at the ends of the screw, said screw also being held in place by the hearing which extends between the screw and at least one of the ears.
5. The combination of a base having a slotted portion provided with teeth on the opposite sides thereof, a longitudinally movable member having a plate engaging jaw and a vertical member entering the slotted portion between the teeth, and a screw engaging the teeth and having end engagement with the vertical member, said movable member having an opening in and extending through the top portion thereof for an operating tool or member which engages the end of the screw that engages the vertical member.
6. The combination of a base having a slotted portion provided longitudinally thereof with a series of teeth, a hook carrying member movable along said slotted portion and a rotatable screw operating member whose axis extends longitudinally of said slotted portion, the hook carrying member having a printers plate engaging hook at the top thereof and a vertically extending member or ear which enters said slotted portion, the screw being in engagement with said teeth and the end of said screw member being in engagement with the vertically extending member or ear, the hook carrying member being provided with an opening at the top whereby the screw can be actuated by a screw engaging member which extends between said vertically extending member and said screw.
