Description

No. 670,468. Patented Mar. 26, [90L 0. COLLINS.
NIPPLE CHUCK.
(Application filed Oct. 19, 1900.)
3n venfo'a NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL COLLINS, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
NIPPLE-CHUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 670,468, dated March 26, 1901.
Application filed October 19, 1900. Serial No. 33,600. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in
which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved chuck or holder; Fig. 2, a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 4:; Fig. 3, a similar section taken on the line 3 3 of same figure; and Fig. 4,a side elevation, partly in section.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, A and B indicate two members forming the stock of the tool, said members being formedn'ound on their exterior surfaces and having flat meeting edges.
Section B of the stock is shorter than section A, and projecting from the end thereof is a longitudinally-extending centrally-disposed stem F, formed adjacent to its end with a vertical slot D. E designates a movable jaw slotted to receive the stem 0, to which it is movably connected by a pin F, passingthrough slot D. The inner face of this movable jaw is inclined, as illustrated.
The two members A andB of the stock are formed in their flat meeting edges with halfround longitudinally-extending grooves G, forming a round groove to receive a screwthreaded rod H, A plate I is secured to the rear ends of sections A and B, securing the same together, and this plate is formed with a screw-threaded opening J in line with the groove and through which the screw-threaded rod extends and is operated. The opposite end of the rod is reduced and is rotatably retained in a wedge-shaped expanding-block K, which. moves in a groove L, formed in the face of member A of the stock. As the screwthreaded rod is rotated the wedge is drawn inwardly and by engagement with the inclined inner face of the movable jaw moves the jaw outwardly and causes the same to tightly engage the nipple in which the tool is inserted. By rotating the screw-threaded rod in a reverse direction the tool instantly releases the.nipple.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. A device of the character described comprising a stock formed at one end with a stationary jaw having a longitudinally-extending groove formed in its inner face and reduced to form a stem slotted transversely, a movable jaw slotted to receive said stem and having a pin extending through the slot of the latter and formed with an inclined face, a sliding wedge movable between said jaws and in the groove formed in the stationary jaw, and means for effecting the movement of said wedge, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described comprising a stock having a centrally-disposed groove extending longitudinally therethrough, and formed at one end with a stationary jaw, and a slotted stem, a movable jaw mounted on said stem and having a pin moving in said slot and formed with an inclined inner surface, a plate secured to the end of said stock and formed with a screwthreaded opening in line with the groove of the stock, a screw-threaded rod movable in said groove and through said screw-threadedopening of the plate and a wedge loosely attached to the end of said. rod and moving between the two jaws, substantially as described. Y DANIEL COLLINS. Witnesses:
