To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMI CLAUDE TUTTLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Mechanical Movement for Adjusting the Movable Members of Trenches, Chucks, and other Tools, of which the following is a descript-ion.
My invention is an improvement in the means of adjusting the jaws of wrenches, chucks, etc., and movable members of other tools. These movable members have diagonal grooves cut into the sides, or diagonal slots cut through from side to side; they are supported within a head and adjusted by means of sliding arms which move in longitudinal slots in the sides of the head adjacent to the diagonal grooves or slots in the movable members; the arms have bosses at the forward end which fit and move in the diagonal grooves; or are connected by a pin which passes through diagonal slots in these members. A longitudinal movement of the adjusting arms causes a lateral reciprocating movement of the movable members. The adjusting arms are connected at the back with a locking device which holds them firmly in any desired position.
The object of my invention is to provide a means of rapid adjustment for the jaws of wrenches, chucks, Vises, liers, etc., the cutting members of expanslon bits, drills, reamers, etc., and movable members of other tools; the movement of these members is reciprocating and at right angles to the movement of the adjusting arms. I accomplish these results by means of the mechanism illustrated in the following drawing, in which Figure 1. is a front view, Fig. 2 an end View and Fig. 3. a side view of the complete invention with the movable members opened. Fig. 4. is a detail per spective view, showing the adjusting arms, the bosses at the forward ends of the arms and the locking devices, Fig. 5. shows a movable member with a diagonal groove in the side, Fig. 6 shows a portion of the adjusting arms connected by a pin and Fig. 7 shows a movable member with a diagonal slot.

The body of the tool is composed of a head A. and a shank B. back of the head, Figs.
1. and 3. The head A. has a transverse opening a. Fig. 3. with parallel sides and ends, to accommodate one or two movable members C. The sides of the head are divided through the middle by longitudinal slots Z). Figs. 1 and 2. adjacent to the transverse opening a. and extending from the forward end of the transverse opening to the shankat the back of the head; these slots accommodate the adjusting arms D. Figs. 1. and 1 In the back end of the transverse opening a. are pockets 6. Figs. 1. and 3. adjacent to the longitudinal slots 6. which form recesses for the bosses I to fit into while assembling the movable members C.
There is an opening through the front end of the head adjacent to and parallel with the transverse opening a. for each movable member, as shown at c. Fig. 2. to allow the movable members to extend forward of the front end and close in toward the middle of the head. The opening 0. extends in a little less than one half the width across the head leavingthe end solid across the middle to strengthen the sides and prevent them from spreading under a strain.
The head is grooved in across the front end parallel with the transverse opening to allow the sides to extend forward forming bearings on the outsides of the movable members as shown at g. Figs. 1. and 3.
The movable members C. have diagonal grooves cut into the sides of the parts that are supported within the transverse opening as shown at d Figs. 1. and 5. in which the bosses on the ends ofthe adjusting arms fit and move, or diagonal slots cut through from side to side as shown at (Z Fig. 7. in which the pin connecting the forward ends of the adjusting arms fits and moves.
The back ends of the adjusting arms D, are connected with a locking device which moves upon the shank B. the shank being between the arms when they are drawn back. The locking device is composed of a jacket E. which is attached to the adjusting arms, a sleeve F. which fits and moves inside the jacket E. and upon the shank B, L
a collar G. which screws into the jacket E at the back and fits and moves upon the shank B, a set screw H which passes through the slot f in the jacket E, and
screws into the sleeve F. and a coil spring J. inside the jacket around the sleeve which keeps the sleeve pressed back then drawn back into the pockets 6.
against the collar as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and L. The set screw H. tightens the sleeve upon the shank and the slot f allows the jacket to move back and forth upon the sleeve. The opening in the jacket through which the sleeve passes is reduced at the forward end and the sleeve is also reduced for a portion of its length to pass through this end; this leaves a space between the sleeve and acket for the coil spring J. The collar G furnishes a means of drawing the jacket back after the sleeve is tightened upon the shank for the purpose of tightening the movable members upon an object or giving them a finer adjustment. The bosses I, fit into notches in the forward ends of the adjusting arms as shown in Fig. 4:. and are placed in position through the transverse opening after the arms are moved forward in the longitudinal slots Z2; they are The movable members are then placed in position in the transverse opening with the diagonal grooves adjacent to the longitudinal slots and the back ends of the grooves in line with the pockets 6; the arms are then moved forward and the bosses pass into the diagonal grooves; the stops K. are then screwed in place passing through the pockets 6. to prevent the bosses from being drawn out of the diagonal grooves. Where diagonal slots and a pin are used the pin fits into holes in the ends of the adjusting arms and is placed in position after the movable members are in place passing through the diagonal slots in these members.
I have been unable to find any mechanical device in which this movement is used for the purpose for which I claim it, and I therefore claim:
1. A mechanical movement in which movable members supported within a head are adjusted laterally by means of arms which move longitudinally through slots in the sides of the head, and have projections at the forward ends which fit and move in diagonal slots cut into the sides of the movable members; with a locking device attached to the back of the arms which moves and tightens upon a shank extending back from the head.
2. In a mechanical movement, the main part or body of the device, consisting of a head and shank; the head having a transverse opening with parallel sides and ends, with the sides divided through the'middle by longitudinal slots adjacent tothe trans verse opening; the back end of the trans verse openinghaving pockets adjacent to the longitudinal slots; the forward end having an opening for each movable member adjacent to and parallel with the transverse opening and extending a little less than one-half the width across the end; the head also having a groove across the front end parallel with the transverse opening. 7
3. In a mechanical movement;- a combination of adjusting arms with projections at the forward ends and alocking device at the back, consisting of a jacket attached to the arms, a sleeve which moves inside the jacket, a collar screwed into the back end of the jacket a coil spring inside the jacket around the sleeve and a set screw which passes through a longitudinal slot in the jacket and screws into the sleeve.
4. In a mechanical movement: a combination of a main part or body of the device, consisting of a head and shank, with a trans verse opening in. the head, longitudinal slots in the sides of the head adjacent to the transverse opening, pockets in the back end of the transverse opening adjacent to the longitudinal slots, openings through the front end of the head extending a little less than one-half the width across the head and parallel with the transverse opening,
and a groove across'the front end of the.
head parallel with the transverse opening; movable members with diagonal slots cut into the sides, which fit and move in the transverse opening in the head; adjusting arms with projections at the forwardends and a lockin device at the back which moves and tightens upon the shank back of the head and consists of a jacket attached to the arms, a sleeve which moves inside the jacket and upon the shank, a collar screwed into the back end of the jacket, a coil spring inside the jacket around the sleeve and a set screw passing through a longitudinal slot in the jacket and screwed into the sleeve; also stops screwed into the head back of the transverse opening passing through the pockets in the path of the project-ions on the forward ends of the arms, all substantially as set forth and for the purpose specified.
