VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
Application filed Decemiier 3, 1918. 7 Serial No. 265,120.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN W. FULTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowville, in the county of Lewis and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the. letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful' improvements in quick acting bench Vises of the type in which a movable jaw is mounted upon a tail block having a sliding movement through a passagewayin the stationary jaw and held in an adjusted position by fulcrum means while the work is held in position by an independent action of the movable jaw.
More specifically, the present invention consists of a vise of this type in which an adjustable bearing plate isv mounted within the opening through the shank portion of the fixed jaw and upon which the tail block fulcrum members for locking the block,
Another feature of the Present, invention consists in the provision of a novel means of collar for actuating the movable jaw which means is located outside the casing, and which will aiford a greater bearing for the movable jaw upon thetail block.
The invention consists of further details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
fMy invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a partof this application,- and in which:'
. Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vise made in accordance with my invention.
. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the vise.
Fig. '3 is a cross sectional view on line 3 -3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. a is a sectional view on line H of Fig. '1, showing the face View of the collar to which the screw is swiveled, and
Fig. 5 is a'sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 2, showing the adjustable bearing plate on-which the tail block is mounted.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numerals:
l designates, the fixed jaw which is pro vided with apertured flanges through which fastening means is passed to secure the same to abench or other object, and the shank portion of said jaw is provided with a rectangular opening 3 through which-the tail block .1.- is adapted to have a sliding movement. The tail block is provided with oppositely disposed longitudinal grooves 5 having beveled walls 6, and one end of the tail block is provided with a hole, the walls of which are threaded for the reception of the screw 7. The wall of the tail .block leading into the opening in which said screw is mounted has an oil duct 8, whereby I the screw may be conveniently lubricated. Mounted in recesses 9 having top walls inclined, which recesses are formed oppositeeach other in the walls of the opening through the shank portion of the fixed jaw are the two fulcrum members, designated by numerals 10, each of which is provided with beveled tops conforming to the in-- clined top walls ofsaid recesses and beveled surfaces'll and 12 conforming to the beveled surfaces of the channels in the opposite faces of the tail block, and into which the beveled portions ofsaid members project.
under edge, is adapted to be supported. Said plate is .preferablyfof a hardenedgmaterial to withstand the wear incident to; the sliding movement of the tail block-which rest s thereon. Said plate is given a longitudinal movement through the medium of the adi s i s. s w. 15' mea sla n: I-th e ed head of the screw is provided with a transverse aperture for the reception of the u'iauipiilatin'g bar In operation, when it is desiredto separate or move the jaws toward each other. it may be done by slightly raising the end of the tail block carrying the movable jaw sufficiently todisengage theunder beveled faces in the longitudinal grooves of the tail block from contact-with the under beveled faces of the fulcrum members, it being understood that the tilting of the tail block is made possible by reason of the fact that the verticai height of the opening in the shank portion of the fixed jaw is slightly greater than the width of the tail block. hen theblock is tilted it may he slid freely backand forth. After the aws have been adjusted to receive the work, the end of the tail block carrying themovable jaw may be lowered, and as the beveled portions of the fulcrum members engage the lower beveled faces of the grooves in the tail block, thejaws will be held in adjusted positions, after which the screw may be turned to cause the movable jaw to be actuated to securely clamp and hold the workbetween the jaws. hen it is desired to release the jaws from the work, the screw is loosened, and by repeating the operation of elevating the end of the tail block carrying the movable jaw, the block will slide freely.
By the provision of the adjustable bearing plate upon which the tail block is mounted which plate is moved longitudinally through the medium of the screw mounted in the aperture in the wall ofthe shank portion of the stationary jaw, the tail block may be raised or lowered and thereby adjusting the front or movable'jaw, which is an 7 essential feature of applicants invention.
By the provision of. mounting the collar, which operates the movable jaw when the work in the vise is removed, outside of the casting, a large bearing surface is provided for the movable jaw upon the tail block, and
in providing the stud bolt, which is tapped into the end of the tail block and which passes through the plate to which the collar isfastened, a secure means isprovided for relieving the sliding jaw of strain whichwill come upon the stud bolt when the travel of the sliding jaw is outward or releasing the work between the jaws of the vise.v
