EDWIN W. FULTON, or LOWVILLE, newv YORK, Assieivon To viinoxv vIsE co., mc.,

QUICK-ACTING- VISE.
To all whom z5 may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN W. FULTON, a citizen of the United States, residinfr at Lowville, in the county of Lewis and of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quick-Acting Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,4 such as will enable others skilled in the art to'which it. appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to a novel invention, in quick-acting bench vises of the type in which a movable jaw is mounted upon a tail-block having a sliding movement through a passageway in the stationary jaw, and held in an adjusted position by fulcrum means, while the work is held inposition by an independent action of the movable aw.
The object of the invention is to improve upon the vise forming the subject matter of my U. S. Patent #1,299,828, granted April 8th, 1919.
Broadly speaking, the invention resides in a vise provided with a Xed jaw, a tailblock slidable therethrough and carrying a movable jaw, and means carried by the iiifredA jaw for frictionally clamping or retaining the tail-block and in an adjusted position thereon.. v
The invention also resides in certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The accompanying drawings clearly illustrate an exemplary construction capable of carrying out the underlying principles of the invention.
Briefly described:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the vise, constructed in accordance with my invention. Y
Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation of the movable jaw.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the vise.
specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. Application filed January 29, 1920. Serial No. 354,924.
Statev Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of the frictional retaining member, and i Fig. 6 is a detail view in perspective of the adjustable fulcrum member.
Referring now in detail to the drawings:
ldesignates a fixedjaw provided with a shank 2, and with a base 3, adapted to rest upon a support 4 provided with perforated ears 5 through which fastening means, not shown, may pass to secure the support 4 to a bench 6,01. the like. Any suitable means may be provided for frictionally clamping the base 3 on the support 4, which means constitute no part of my invention.
The shank :2 of the fixed jaw 1 is provided with a rectangular opening, through which the tail-block 7 slides, and which tail-block carries the movable j aw 8 having a shank 9.
Disposed in a transverse groove 10 in the bottom wall of the opening in the shank 2 through which the tail-block 7 slides, is a fulcrum member 11, and which member is a block, preferably, of hardened material to withstand the wear of the sliding movement of the tail-block 7; and is provided with a transversely curved top surface 12 on Vwhich the tail-block 7 rocks and slides.
The fulcrum member is also provided with a longitudinally inclinedv bottom face 112, slidable on a correspondingly inclined bottom wall 12EL of the groove 10. v
Suitable means are provided for adjusting the fulcrum member 11 in the groove 10, and in this instance such means comprises two screws 13, 13, threaded through apertures in the side walls of the shank 2, and bearing at their inner ends against the respective ends of the fulcrum member 11, as shown in Fig. 4.
The movable jaw 8 is moved with respect to the tail-block 7 by any suitable means, which may be the same as the form shown in my said patent, and which constitutes no part of the present invention.
The iiXed jaw l carries a frictional retaining member for the tail block, and in this instance such member comprises a grip pin y14 disposed transversely of said jaw and through the longitudinally alined opento be open, and it being desired to close said jaws against the worlr: raise the front jaw S until the tail-block can be moved freely back and forth in the opening in the shank 2 of the fixed jaw 1, put the work between the two jaws, then push the front jaw 8 against the work, let go the front j aw, and secure the Said jaw 8 firmly against the work by turning the manipulating bar 16, thus moving the jaw 8 with respect to the tail-block 7. The manipulating bar 16 is used only for tightening or loosening the jaw S against the work.
It will be obvious that when the tail-block 7 is released, after being moved in the open-V ing in the shank 2 of the fixed jaw 1, the tendency will be for the block to tilt or drop at its front end, rocking or tilting on the fulcrum 11, and frictionally wedging against the pin 14, thus frictionally securing the tail-block against movement, and, consequently, the jaws against movement.
What I claim to be new is:
1. In a vise, the combination with a fixed jaw having an opening therethrough, of a tail stock slidable through the opening, a fulcrum block secured in the bottom of the opening and having its top surface raised above the plane of said bottom, a grip pin secured at the top of the opening and having `its lower surface lower than the plane of said top and out of alinement with the fulcrum block, a movable aw carried upon the tail stock, and means to move the jaw upon said tail stock.
2. In a vise, the combination of a fixed jaw having an opening therethrough, of a fulcrum block extending transversely across' and above the bottom of theopening, means toadju-st the fulcrum block vertically, a grip pin inserted through the fixed jaw and having its lower surface extending below f adjustably raised above the lower surface of such opening, a grip pin extending transversely across the upper part of the opening and at a distance from the vertical plane of the stationary jaw greater than the distance of the fulcrum block from said plane, a tail stock inserted through the opening and proportioned to bear upon the fulcrum block and grip against the pin, and a movable jaw carried by the tail stock.
4. In a vise, a fixed jaw having an opening therethrough, a `fulcrum block extending transversely across the opening, means to adjust the fulcrum block to position its upperfsurface a greater or lesser distance above the surrounding plane of the opening, a grip pin extending below the plane of the upper wall of said opening and out of alinement with the fulcrum block, a tail stock inserted through the opening, proportioned to rest upon the fulcrum block and grip against the in, and a movable jaw carried by the tail stock, positioned to co-act with the fixed jaw.
5. In a vise, a ixed jaw having an opening therethrough, the major axis of which is perpendicular to the plane of the jaw, a fulcrum block extending transversely across the opening, means to adjust the fulcrum block longitudinally to effect a vertical adjustment thereof, a grip pin extending transversely across the the fixed aw and having a portion depending within the opening at a distance from the plane of the fixed jaw greater than the distance of the fulcrum block from said plane, a tail stock inserted through the opening and proportioned to rest upon the fulcrum block and grip against the pin, and a movable aw carried upon the tail stock, adapted to co-act with the fixed Jaw.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
EDWIN W. FULTON.
