Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMAENT IN ROUND COMBS.
Spccitication forming part of Letters Patent No. 105,957, dated August 2, `1870.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, GEORGE T. LINCOLN, of the city and county of Providence, and State Of Rhode Island, have made a new and useful invention having reference to Combs; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the followingspecification vand represented in the accompanyingdrawings, of which- Figure lis a top view, andFig. 2 a side elevation, of the invention.
rIhe said invention is a peculiar combination and arrangement of two short combs and a band connecting them, which band ma-y be elastic and curved or elastic or iieXible and straight. The end combs may be pivoted to the connection-band, or may be in one piece with or be otherwise fastened to it. They may also be connected with it by means of arms pivoted to it, as represented in the drawings. The compound comb or round comb I make with each of the side combs combined with the band or the connection-piece by means of either a single pivot or by a compound pivot or universal joint, as `hereinafter explained.l This construction of what is termed a round comb77 not only effects a saving of material and economy in cost, but renders the comb more convenient of adjustment to the head of a person comparatively to the common round comb having teeth extended from end to end of it.
In the drawings, A denotes a curved band of tortoise-shell, horn, vor other material of which combs are usually formed. The said band is without teeth; but in some cases it may have them to extend nearly if not entirely from end to end, and from one edge of it or only from one or more portions of such edge. The object of making the bandwithout teeth is to obviate the liability of such to split or otherwise injure or extract the hair of that part of the head of the wearer about which the band extends when inuse. To this band, at or near its opposite ends, two small side combs, B B, are attached, each of them at its middle being pivoted to the band, so as to be capable of lbeing turned either in range with or at right angles with the band. The band may be in one entire piece; or it may be composed of three or more pieces, a b a', the two pieces a a being much shorter than the middle piece, b', and. pivoted to it at or near its ends. It' preferable, the said side combs may be riveted to the band. When a round comb so constructed is applied to the head of a person, the two combs are to be inserted in the hair, the connection-band merely resting on the ,intermediate hair and serving to hold it in place. The band A may be either plain or ornamented, as occasion may require.
Fig. 3 is a top view, and Fig. 4a transverse section, on an enlarged scale, of the compound connection of each side comb with the band or short piece a thereof. In this connection the comb isjoined by a hinge, d', to the pivot 1 e', which turns within the band or part a thereof. By means of the compound connection the side comb not only can be turned on a'plaue about parallel with thepart of the band to whichit is applied, but it may also be turned in a plane at right angles therewith, the same serving to enable the side comb to be fitted to the head without twisting the band,
and kthereby rendering it uncomfortable to the wearer.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The article as described,or,in other Words, the combination and arrangement of the iieXible or elastic or curved band A and the two side combs, B B, the whole beingsubstantially as specified, Whether the band be made in one entire piece or in several pieces jointed together. f
2. The roundV comb as made withpeach of the side combs, B B, connected with the band A by means of the hinge d and pivot e', arranged together and with the comb and band,
as set forth.
GEO. T. LINCOLN.
