HAT-BOX LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent. 1
Patented Aprs22, 1913.
Application filed October 19, 1912. Serial No. 726,717,
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that.I,:EvERE'rrE R. J oNEs,-a citizen of the United States, residing at Blackshear, in the county of Pierce and State of Georgia, haveiinvented a new. and useful Hat-BoxIifter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towbich;
it appertains to make and useth same.
Thls invention relates to a new and useful hat box lifter.
As one of the objectsof the invent-ion,
is the aim to provide a device of this nature, whereby hat boxes. may be lifted with care from high shelves and the like.
A further object of the inventionzis the provision of a lifter of this nature, comprising two sections united together by a dove-tailed or telescopical union or joint,
tical fields these features. may necessitate I alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall? within. the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combinationof parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Fig. 1 is a view in perspective, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailperspective view of the improved lifter. Fig.
3 is alongitudinal sectional. view. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the extensible section of the lifter. Fig. 5 is across sectional View,
on line 5--5 of Fig. 12.
Referring more especially to the :drawings I and 2 designate the two sections of the lifter. The section .1 1 constitutes the holder provided with a longitudinal idovetailed open ended groove .3 adapted to receive the shank 40f the extensible section 2..
'The shank 4 in: cross section :corresponds in contour with the groove3. The back side. of the shank 14 is provided with a leaf spring 6, adapted to bear frictionally against the. inner face of the groove 3, so as to hold. the extensible section 2 in extended positions: The holder :or section 1 is constructed with.
a cutaway portion 7 forming shoulders 8, against which the shoulders 9 of the 660- tion 2 contact, when the said section 2 is fully withdrawn within the section or holder 1. The section 2 beyond the shoulders 9 terminates in, a thin blade 10, while the I lower portion of the holder or section. .1
terminates in a handle 11. The lower end. of the shank 4 is provided with .a thumbh piece 12, whereby the extensible section may be extended or withdrawn into the holder or. section :1. The leaf spring .6 is provided with serrations 13 for engagement with the 1 inner face of the grooved in order to ini sureithe holding of the extensible sectioni in an extended position.
In lifting a hat box from a shelf,: the thin "blade 10 is firstinserted under the .annular flainge of the cover of the box while: the lower edge of the body of the box rests upon theend 14 of the section or holder 1, there being small spurs 15 adapted to enter the bottom of the box, so as to insure against 1 displacement :of the same, when removing. the box: from a shelf. WVhen the extensible section is extended, and a person is in the act of lifting a box, the extensible section tends to spring from the other section, as. the box is being lifted.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is A hatbox lifter, comprising two sections, one constituting a holder section, and;the other anextensible section, the holder section. having. a longitudinal clove-tailed groove, while the extensible section is provided with a shank dove-tailed in said groove, the shank of the extensible sectioni. having a spring provided with serrations adapted ito frictionally engage the inner face of said groove for holding the extensiw ble S6CtlOI118XteIlded,L thumb piece forming 1 an integral. part of the shank of the extensible section, whereby the same may be ad-l justed, the holder section and the extensible section having. cooperating shoulders; to limit the sections in their closed relations, the extensible section beyond its shankiter: minating in a blade adapted to engage 1111-. dertheiannular flange of a box lid, whilek the upper end of the holder section is proname to this speoificat-ionlin the presence of vided with means adapted to pierce the two subscribing witnesses. lower peripheral ed e 0f the body of the v box, the two section; when one is ex'tended ,EVERETTE JONES 0 adapted to slightly springapart, in order Witnesses:
to insure a proper grip upon the box. l J. M. TAYLOR, In testimony whereof I have signed my H. DANIEL Copies of this patent maybe obtained for five'cents each, by addressing theof Commissioner of Patents,
