As'crsclter cod frequently opened andclosecl tightly to exclude moisture and dust, it is ucccsssry to proricle a convenient lid.
The usual hinged licl, flanged on three sides. convenient and suiliciently tight, but. heretofore collapsible containers have not been so constructed. Thspresent payer rmldies are not collapsible and are provided with e hinged and flanged lid. iis thus con 1 1, they are shipped. to the cracker in woocleh crates.
" ing rather more than the this expense is largely WaSlK-Efi me canniiesywheu tilled, are shipped iiist ring crackers for'the retail- The crates orevorying quantities cool few of the crates can be utilized in reshipment. Also a. high freight rate is charged on the boxes thus peeked. To provide 3. folding or collapsible cracker caddy having-a. hinged lid with flanges adopted to close tightly. and convenient to open for the removal of the contents of the low; in retailing the commodity contained in the box, is the object of my invention. v o 1 in the accompanying drawing I have sho'i-vne collapsible caddy constructed in so cor-canoe with the preferred form of my in- 'vention.
Figure'll is s perspective of the box as scmhiell ready to receive the comniocli't-y which it. is to hold. Fig. 2 is a top plan .oi'the hos partially collapsed. Fig. 3 is en elevation of the box co lapsed re'etly for packing. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the cover removed ond'rcsciy to be packed for ship ment. Fig. 5 is a plan of a modified form, the lid being thrown back. so The box, as shown, consists of four walls or sirlcs 1, 2, 3 and e, connected by a suitable flexible joint at the corners 5. In the box [shown the paper is, merely creased or tolclecl at the corners, the side walls losing formed 8 of a single piece, the end eclgcs of which are joinecl at the corner 5 h moons of a; strip of caper or cloth 6. ficcureri to the bottom enlge of each sirle,.hy means of any suitable, flexible joint, is s bottom flap 7,
'7. lln the box shown the flaps sire formed of the some piece of paper which forms the sides, but the bottom flops are separated from each other by slots 8 in o-linemcnt with the corners, and the paper is creased at the bottom cdge of the side-walls so that the flaps are in effect hinged to fold inward and form thohottoin of the box. Preferably the crease 9 at the top eclge of the flop 7 is spaced at short distance, substantially the thickness of the ma terial, above the crease 9 zit the top edge of the flops/T".- With the flaps creased as described In ossenihling or. setting up the box, the upper two marked 7 are first folded inwarthoncl the ,tWo lower flops 7", which are opposite each other are their folded against the flaps 'Z, and if it found desirehle, they are scaled or posted. to form a flat, rigid bottom for the box.
the cover indicated 'by reference character i0 is on important feature or" my inventionit fizingechon three sides'and hinged so that it operates ina manner similar to that of the cover of the usual tin caddy or non-collapsible paper caddy, it is made of a separate piece of material from the box and is packed separately for shipment, being quickly and easily attached for setting up the box and detached in knocking down the box for shipment.
The cover, as shown in itspreferred form, is flanged at three edges at 11 and on \the fourth edge is provided with a hinge tlap I2. Atits top edge the box is reinforced by means of a band or frame 13s'ecured to the inner faces of the walls. This band or frame, as shown, is four-sided and secur d to each of the walls. At the rear a portion of the band is free, leaving a slot or pocket 15 between the rear wall and the band. In
this slot or pocket the hinge flap is inserted in assembling the box, and to prevent withdrawal of the flap, it is provided with tongues or tabs 14 which overlap the lower edge of the band. p
It will be apparent that when assembled, as shown in Fig. 1, the box forms an efiicient cracker caddy having a hinged lid with edge flanges which close tightly after the manner of the usual erackercad At the same time, the box or caddy may e conveniently collapsed and packed for shipment, .the flanged cover being removed by withdrawing the flap lQ from the pocket 15-, the tabs being folded flat for this purpose. Thus a. large portion of the cjost for crating of ti e usual paper cracker caddies, as Well as a very large percentage of the expense for freight, is saved, and at the same time a caddy equal in etticiency to the present noncollapsible caddy is provided.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a collapsible caddy having a flanged cover 16 with a. hinge connection l7 to one wall of the box. This cover is not removable'but is packed with the collapsible caddy, preferably being folded back against the side to which it is attached. in packing 'the collapsible cad-- dies, they are placed with the covers side by side, so that. the flanges of the neighboring covers tend to s1lp1')ort each other and prevent crushing'; 4
I have thus described a single embodiment of my. invention in order that its nature and operation may be clearly understood. However, the specific terms herein are used in their descriptive rather than in their limiting sense and the scope of theinvention is defined in the claims.
I claim 1. In combination, a collapsible paper box, a separate detachable lid therefor having a flap hinged thereto at its rear edge, the box having a pocket near its top edge to receive the flap and from which the flap may be removed at will, the flap serving as a hinge for the cover.
2. In combination, a collapsible paper box, a separate detachable lid therefor having a hinge flap at one edge, the box having a pocket near its top edge to receive the flap, the flap serving as a hinge for the cover and flexible tongues on the hinge flap to engage the pocket and prevent withdrawal of the flaptherefrom.
3. In combination, a collapsible box having a band secured to the sides adjacent to the top edge and extending along the sides, a portion of, the band being fr e of the sides so as to form a pocket, :1 sephrate cover for the box having a bin e flap at its rear edge to fit the pocket the ap serving as a hinge for the cover-and being free to be removed from and inserted in the pocket at will.
.4. In combination, a hollapsible box havin a band secured to the sides adjacent tolthe top edge and ext nding alang the sides,,a portion of the band being fi de of the sir es'so as to form a pocket, a separate cover for the-box having a hinge flap to fit the pockbt, the flap serving as a, hinge for the cover and means in the form of tongues or tabs to prevent withdrawal. of the flap from the pocket. l
5.111 combination, a collapsible box, a frame ctnnposcd of a. narrow band similar in plan to the horizontal section of the box and adapted to fit in the box near the top, a porlion of one side of the frame being free to form a pocket, between the band and the side of the box, a separate lid for the box having a hinge flap adapted to be inserted in the pocket between the band and the top wall, the flap havingtabs to engage the band and prevent its withdrawal the flap serving I i as a hinge for the cover.
Signed by me at .l'fialtimore this 23d day of August, 1912.
