Specification of Letters atent.

Serial No. 642,191.
Application filed August 3, 191i.
To all whom it may concern Be it. known thatvl, LoNZo G+. SHARP, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Columbus.l in the county of Franklin and State oi Qhio, have invented' a certain new and useful Improvement in Sofa or Davenport Beds, of which the following is a speciiication.
|The object of this invention is to provide an improved construction of sofa or davenport bed in which the parts are of simple,
economical and durable construction and. `easy operation.
lit is directly mounted. Fig. i is a detail showing the drop leg for the outer bed section. Fig. 5 is a detail in side view of the rocking 'frame or standard.
In the views 10 designates a rectangular box or frame that is bolted at 10 to usual ornamental end pieces 11. The forward part of this box .constitutes the front rail of the structure or the base oi the front rail.
The character 12 designates the seat frame which is also of rectangular form and suitably upholstered at one side. The seat frame 12 is hinged to tlm; forward edge of the box 10 as indicated at 12a.
.The spring bed frame is itoldalfle and comprises an inner section 13, a outer section 14 and a middle section 15 hinged to the scc. tions 13 and 14;. The spring bed frame is mounted or supported on the box 'frame 10, and on the under sidevof the seat frame 12, so thatby manipulating the seat frame only the spring bed can be opened and closed, the bed being normally housed beneath the seat when the latter is closed.
The mechanism for automatically eiect ing the opening and closing o the springA bed frame is the same at each end of the structure so that a description ot one 'will suliice for bot-h. Said mechanism as itvap seat frame.
pears at one end ot the struct-ure will now be described.
Connecting the inner bed section 13 with the box frame 10 is a bent klink 16 and connecting said bent link with the middle sec-l tion 'i5 of the bed is a bar 17 slotted. at 17 Where it connects with said bent link. `The bent link supports the inner bed section at the proper level at the rear end when the bed is opened.`
Journaled in ears 19 and 19, at each for ward corner of the box .frame v10` or on the front rail is a rocking frame or standard 2.0 that is hinged at its upper end to the middle or connecting section 15 of the bed. This rocking standard Q0 has rigidiy secured to it an arn'i 2l and connecting the arm 21 with the seat frame 19. is a link 22 hinged to the seat frame. The link 22 where it receives the pin 2P of the arm 21 is slotted as seen at 22-, and the middle section 15 is Wholly supported by the standards 2O when the bed is tlurned to open positiony as best depicted in Gg. 1. and the seat freine is a bent lever 24: hinged on a pin :it 24h to the seat traine and having in its end a pin 2i thatv extends through the slot 23 of an arm 22B-hinged to said seat frame. The slot 23 is `provided with e notch 23" at its inner end (as viewed in Figi.
1) forming a shoulder to engage the in 2li* in the operation of the bed. Nhen t e seal'.A is raised the outer bed. section falls toward the under side of the seat thereby throwing the drop legs up alongside the edge of the In turning the seat back the Connecting the outer bed section liA erin 23 drops down causing the engagement`v of the pin 24 with the shoulder' ot' the notch 23h (see Fig. 2) thereby locking the bed section 14 and seat frame close together for the opening operation. Vhen the bed is opened the edge of the seat is supported at each end Yby means of a leg like that shown at 26.
This leg is pivoted to a plate at 26' and is I automatically operated by a link 27 that 1s hinged to the front bar of the bed section 14 and connected hingedly and eccentrically with the leg at 27. the separation of the bed section 1l and the seatrarne causes the leg` Q6 to assume an erect position, and conversely when the bed section 11i closes against thev seat frame as before described the leg,- is thrown up along side of said frame.
When the bed is opened The operation is very simple. To open the bed the seat is teken at its free edge by the usuel strap, is appears in Figs. l and "2, sind turned out to the ponition indicated in l. To close the bed the seat is turned inward from the position shown in Fig. l until it assumes tlie position Shown in Fig. El. matieally assume substantialy the positions illust-rated :is tlie .opened and ciosed posi tions i'espectively in Yigg. l and 2. The rocking standards 2O permit the extension of the, Spring bed trame with great ease and Derinit of :simple outward projection of the ,ed when opened. The room provided tor the mattress and bed clothing between the bed fiume sections is :imple and euch ticles in reasonable bulk do not interfere with the operation ot tlle mechanism.
ln this; construction it will be observed that ali tlie operatine mechanism is mounted upon the box vtrame 10 und seat l2, hence tlie bed can be shipped i'zmnonnted and. easily. assembled by the retail dealer. lNlien so mounted it maken :L rigid structinfe. i
