nitrittant BL DCOLITTLE, OF BRIDGEPCRT, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent o. 105,878, dated August 2, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN' TWINE AND THREAD-CUTTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettere Patent making part of the same.
To allwhom ttmay concern.'
Beit known that I, SAMUEL W. ADAMS, of Providence, of Providence county, in the State of RhodeV Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thread or Twine-Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afulland 'exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this application. i i Previous to my invention a great Variety of devices have been suggested to serve the purposes of twine Some have beenV so made as to be adapted for use in'eonnection with a spool; others to be used in connection with a ladys thimble, and others to be attached by/apin orhook to a persons garment.
My invention relates to this last-named kind of twine or thread-cutter, and has lfor its object to provide a twine-cutter which, while it may-be used with the same facility and advantages as other twine-cut- 1ers heretofore designed to be attached to the garment of apex-son by means of a hook or pin, shall be much more vsimple in its construction, and can be much more economically manufactured than-any-of vthose heretofore invented, and to these ends my invention 'cousists in making a twine or thread-cutter of a single .piece of wire, bent' around, so as to form the body and fastening hooks or pins, and a cutting device, in the' manuel' hereinafter mole fully explained; and
My invention further consists in haviug the bodyand cutting device so .made and vcombined that the latter shall bestationary or non-yielding, so as torender the cutting operation more certain, as will be here'- inafter moreffnlly explained.
.To enable vthose skilledin the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it more fully,
I designated by the same letter of reference.
b is the body or frame of the instrument, which is formed,'as shown, of a single piece of wire, bent around, so as to not only afford a stock to secure the cutter or knife, q, to, but so as to also present two pins or securing hooks', c c, by means of which the instrument or machine may be pinned or hooked onto the garment of a person, or to any other desired place to which any thing else could be readily pinned.
. The knife or cutter a is a simple steel blade secured to the wire body, las, shown, where itis bent up in such a manner as to be noufyielding, and so as to present a rigid cutting-edge: l
1f deemed expedient, au ornament of sheet-metal may be struck up and attached to the body l1, so Aas to cover it, and give Vto the whole device a more pleasing or tasteful appearance.
It will be understood that, by formingthe body and hooks all of one piece of wire, as shown, the manufacture of the'instrument is rendered exceedingly sim.
ple and economic, while, by shaping it as shown, and" securing the knife-blade a rigidly to the bent-up portion of the body b, a non-yielding cutter is afforded, whichl deem advantageous. K
The operation of the improved twine-clltter does not need much explanation. As already suggested, the device is adapted to be used by any person havingit hooked or pinned onto the coat or vestcollar, or to the dress of a female, andthe twine or thread is cut by passing it cross-wise down over the cutting-edge of knife a.
vAt tig. y3 I have shown the instrument provided with a retaining loop or catch, into which the pin is sprung, after the fashion of the fastening of a ladies breast-pin. l
Of course the apparatus may be varied iu its shape, design, and size, without departing from the spirit of mypinventiou, so long as its frame or body is formed of one piece, or it has a rigid or non-yielding cutter.
Having explained my invention so that those skilled can make and use it,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl `A twine or thread-cutter, constructed as described, with its entire body and the fastening-pin-or hooks of a single piece of wire, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 21st day of March, 1870. SAMUELV W. ADAMS. [In s] Witnesses z J. MGINTIRE, E. S. H. GULLY.
