Description

J. H. PEPPER.
PIPE VISE.
APPLICATION FILED Anm, 1912 Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. PEPP ER, 0F W-ASCO, OREGON, ASSIGNOR OF'ONE-HALF T0 J. .R. MORGAN, OF
MORO. OREGON.
PIPE-vise.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, JAMES H. PEPPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVasco, in the county of Sherman and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Pipe-Vises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a pipe wrench or vise, and is designed principally for use in connection with well drills and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this character combining strength and simplicity with ease of .adjusta ment and operation.
A further object is to provide means whereby my device may be aflixed to a bench or other support and used as apipe vise for general purposes.
To this end my invention consists in combinations and features illustrated in the appended drawing and fully explained in the following description.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of my device, and Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation substantially through the center of the apparatus.
My device comprises three main parts, a frame a, a hinge cap I), and a sliding jaw 0. The frame is made with a shank or handle 03, is bifurcated, and is at the ends of said bifurcations provided with perforated bosses e, f. Cap 6 journals on boss 6, and is rotatably secured in place by a rivet g, whereby said cap is free to swing open and closed on the frame, and is locked in closed position i by a suitable key It, seating in the perforation of boss f.
The cap is made with a jaw portion provided with stepped notches i, and this portion is made hollow so as to permit the stepped jaw portion of slide 0 to engage this hollow space, whereby the jaws may be set to suitthe required size of pipe.
The frame is made with perforated bosses k, in which I journal a hand-lever Z, and
the short end of this lever is bifurcated to I receive one end of a connecting rod m, the opposite end of which journals in sliding Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 6,- 1912.
Serial No. 689,033.
.jaw '0. By means of a turnbuckle arrange-.
ment 1% said rod is made adjustable longitudinally.
To operate my device the cap I) is in the first instance opened, and the wrench is applied to the pipe to be turned. Sliding jaw c is retracted by elevating hand-lever Z, and the cap is closed and locked in place. The sliding jaw is next adjusted by means of turnbuckle n, and finally the wrench is securely clamped on to the pipe by drawing the hand-lever down.
My device adapts itself, readily for use as a pipe vise, and to this end I provide a series of perforations 0 in the frame, which cooperate with clamping bolts or screws p to rigidly mount the apparatus on a support 9, vertically or horizontally as most convenient. I I
Having thus described my invention, I claim: 1 v
In a pipe vise, in'combination, a bifurcated frame provided with a handle and with means for mounting on a support, a cap hinged on the frame-bifurcation and provided with a hollow jaw-portion, means for locking said cap in position on the frame, a slidable jaw mounted in the bifur cation of said fraine, the notched part of said jaw engaging the hollow jaw-portion ofsaid cap, means for moving said slidable jaw longitudinall in said frame'bifurcation, whereby sai slidable jaw operates in the hollow portion of the cap to draw the slidable jaw and the cap together or apart as conditions require, said means co'mprising a hand-lever pivoted on said frame, and a ink connecting said hand-lever with said slidable jaw, said link provided with longitudinal adjustment.
In testimony whereof .I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of'two witnesses.
Witnesses: En. MERRILL,
C. H. HOWELL.
