UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL S. SENCENBAUGI-I, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS.
DRAPING-MAGHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. SENCEN- BAUGI-I, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Aurora, Kane county,.Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draping-Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the drawings, is a description.
My invention has for its object the production of a machine designed to be used by tailors, dressmakers, and others who have occasion to drape skirts or other garments, more especially those garments requiring to be of different lengths at different points, and to be so arranged that they present an even and uniform appearance around the bottom.
By my improved draping machine the person for whom the draping is to be done is placed upon a platform having a centering device so arranged that it can be adjusted to different positions, depending upon the length of the garment, and by means of which the garment may be quickly and evenly draped the desired length and either marked or pinned in position for finishing. In one form of the construction here shown I have illustrated a revoluble table by means of which the operator may remain in one place and revolve the platform upon which the customer is standing, while the garment is being draped. These and other novel features will be hereinafter explained and more fully pointed out, it being understood that varying changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view illustrating one of the friction rollers; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of construction illustrating the device without the revoluble table; Fig. 5 is a modified form of centering device; Fig. 6 is a sectional detail illustrating the track upon which the measuring device is moved; and Fig. 7 is a sectional View of a modified form of draping arm.
In carrying out my invention the same letters of reference are used to illustrate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A is a platform upon which the person Specification of Letters Patent.

stands whose garment is to be draped. A base A rests upon the floor and has rising therefrom a plurality of uprights a, a each of which supports in a bearing at the top A pedestal B extends upwardly from said base in the center thereof and has rotatably resting thereon the platform or table A which turns on the pivot Z). Extending around the outer edge of the platform is a plate 5, which has secured thereto a toothed rack 6 Extending upwardly from the base A is a support 0 to which is secured a vertically extending measuring bar 0 having a scale of inches and fractions thereof marked thereon. Adjustably secured by means of the set screw a and slidably niovable on said measuring bar 0 is the draping bar 0' which is bent on the arc of a circle as shown. This bar may be rectangular incross section as shown or V-shaped as shown at c in Fig. 7, or it may be provided with an elongated slot through which the cloth may be marked. Supported upon the measuring bar and extending inside of the draping bar is a plate 0 which presents a surface against which the cloth may be marked in measuring the desired length, or the cloth may be folded over the bar and pinned. A shaft D is supported in a bearing in the upright C and one of the uprights a, said shaft extending beyond the outer periphery of the platform A as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and has on the end thereof a crank d. A pinion d is mounted on said shaft and meshes with the rack bar to revolve the same.
A bracket E is adjustably attached by means of the screws f, f extending through the elongated slots 7, f into the platform A, and supports a cross arm 6 at a slight elevation above said platform as shown. This bracket and cross arm provides a centering device for the person whose garment is to be draped, and may be moved nearer to or farther from the center of the platform as desired, depending upon the difference of the length of the garment in the front and at the back. WVhen the garment to be draped is considerably longer in the back than at the front the centering device is moved farther from the center of the platform, the person standing upon the platform having one foot upon each side of the bracket and the bar 6 resting against the ankles, allows the person to maintain the same position while the garment is being customer stands upon the platform and the measured. Instead of the upright centering device which I have described, the platform might be marked as at 6 6 Fig. 5 to' indicate Where the person should stand, "the meeting point of the lines 6 6* indicating the center over Which the person. should stand.
In the use of the vdevice illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 the customer stands upon the platform, the operator being convenient to the measuring bar, andeas the garment is measured and either marked or pinned over the draping bar, the platform is revolved by turning the crank cl or it may be turned by hand. In the device shown in Fig. 4 the operator moves the measuring bar and draping bar around on the track and marks or pins the garment in posit-ion.
I claim In a draping machine, the combination of a base, a revoluble table supported thereon, a circular toothed rack upon the under side of said table near the edge thereof, a stationary vertical measuring bar secured to the frame of the base and extending in proximity to the periphery of the table, a draping bar extending at right angles to the measuring bar and adjustable vertically thereon, means for locking said bar in fixed adjustment, and means coacting with said rack bar to revolve said table to bring any side thereof to the measuring and draping attachment, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL S. SENCENBAUGII.
