JOHN BERNITT, 0F EVANSTON, ILLINOIS.
TENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BERNIIT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Evanston, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tents, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tents, and more specifically to a tent or covering adapted for use as a protection against mosquitos, flies, etc.
The object of my invention is the production of a tent of the character mentioned which will be of a collapsible nature, one which may be readily and quickly set up and as readily and expeditiously taken down.
A further object is the production of a tent as mentioned, which will be of durable and economical construction and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
WVith these objects in view, my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention willbe more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming apart of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tent embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of one of the end members of the frame of the tent, Fig. 3 is a sectional detail illustrating the connection of the cross bar of the tent frame with the end bars ofthe frame, and Fig. 4; is a section through one of the frame bars, showing the means employed for connecting the tent covering with the frame.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a frame or skeleton consisting of elongated end bars 1. The bars 1 are arranged in pairs which are spaced apart, the bars of each pair being arranged in inverted V-form with their upper extremities contacting. Said extremities of the bars 1 of the pairs of said bars are connected by a ridge pole 2. The extremities of the ridge pole 2 are provided with substantially U-shaped stud members or hooks 3, the outer or free ends of which are adapted to engage registering perforations t provided in the upper ends of the members 1, as clearly shown in Fig.

3. Nuts 5 threaded upon the outer or free ends of the members 3 serve evidently to secure the members 1 upon the members 3 and hence tosecure said members 1 to the member 2 to form a rigid frame. The construction is such, as will be observed, that assembling of the members 1 and 2 as well as disconnection thereof, may be readily and quickly effected. Each of the members 1- and 2 is formed of two sections, the adjacent ends of which telescope, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, so that when the device is not in use, said members may be reduced in length for convenience in storage or shipment.
Over the frame which is formed by the members 1 and 2 is arranged a foraminated covering 6, mosquito netting or tarlatan being preferably used. The covering 6 is designed to fit said frame, said covering at the lines of contact thereof with the bars 1 and 2 being reinforced by strips or bands 7 of fabric, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. To the inner sides of the strips 7 are secured cords 8 which are adapted to be tied about the bars 1 and 2 in order to securely fasten the covering thereto, as clearly shown in Fig. 4:. One end of the covering is open, as shown, in order to afford access to the interior of the tent, the free edge of the flap thus formed being provided with tying cords 9 in order to secure the same in closed position.
A tent of the construction set forth will be found of great convenience in warm weather as a protection against mosquitos, fiies, and other insects, the construction being such that while the same serves as an effective protection, as mentioned, free ventilation is permitted to conduce to the comfort of the occupant of the tent.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for In combination a ridge pole; a pair of posts having transverse perforations through their upper ends, at each end of said ridge pole; U-shaped rods each having one of its legs threaded longitudinally in one end of said ridge pole and its other leg extended through the perforations in one pair of said posts; and a nut threaded on the portion of each leg of said U-shaped rod extended through said pairs of posts, firmly binding each pair of said posts on a leg of said U- 10, shaped rod, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. v
