Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1918.
Application filed March 11, 1918. Serial No. 221,710.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALLIF. OREN CARR and HENRY RAY MILLS, citizens of the United States, residing at Alzada, Carter Co., Montana, and Bellefourche, Butte (30., South Dakota, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheep-Shelters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shelters for sheep. It is more particularly designed as a lambing tent for ewes, though it is also useful as a mere shelter for sheep in general upon ranges where the cold is mtense and there is likelihood of the sheep being frozen.
It is the object of the invention to provide an improved device of the character above set forth constructed in such manner that it will be readily portable; will embody closures which will permit the ready passage of the animals thereinto or therefrom and in which portions of the side walls are utilized as skids or runners upon which the device may be drawn over the ground or over the snow.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows:
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view upon line 3-3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
In carrying out the invention we provide side members 5 and 6 which are of such height as to constitute substantial parts of the sides of the structure and which are shaped at their ends 7 to constitute skids or runners upon which the device may be drawn from place to place. Bows 8 connect the members 5 and 6 and tie-rods 9 extend through the side members 5 and 6 and through the ends of the bows. Inner nuts 10 and outer nuts 11 clamp the ends of the bows and the sides 5 and 6 tightly together, said nuts being threaded upon the rods 9.
thereby form a tent-like structure.
A longitudinally extending rib 12 spaces the central portion of the bows from each other and adds rigidity to the structure. The frame-work formed by the bows 8 and the ribs 12 is covered by a suitable fabric 13 to One end of this structure is closed by an end wall 14 of fabric which is held by ties 15 to the adjacent rod 9. Hinged closures 16 and 17 are carried by the end rods 9 and substan tially close the space between said rods and the ground. That end of the structure opposite the wall 14 is partially closed by flies 18 and 19 held to the adjacent rod 9 by ties 20 and adapted. to be connected by a tie 21. A. flap 22 covers the opening between the flies 18 and 19 that is provided with ties 23 which may be engaged with the adjacent rod 9. The rods 9 projects a suflicient distance beyond the sides 5 and 6 to receive braces 24, the lower ends of which are secured to the sides 5 and 6 and which braces serve to brace the sides from the tie-rods. The upper ends of the braces are clamped between nuts 25 and 26 threaded upon the respective tie-rods. The swinging mounting of the closures 16 and 17 permits the ready passage of sheep or like animals to the interior of the shelter.
The device herein shown and described will be found of great utility and will result in a saving of the lives of large numbers of sheep and lambs, now lost, yearly, through exposure. The device is simple to construct, inexpensive to manufacture, eflicient in use and may be easily drawn to the place where it is required.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described our invention, what we claim is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of skids, bows extending therebetween, rigid tie-rods extending therebetween, a fabric cover for the bows and closures hinged upon some of said tie-rods.
2. A structure as recited in claim 3 wherein said tie-rods extend materially beyond the skids and braces between the projecting In testimony whereof we affix our signeportions of the tie-rods and the skids. tures in the presenceof two witnesses.
3. A structure as recited in claim 3 AL LI E OREN CARR. wherein the" tie rods eizten'd through the "HENRY RAY-=MILLS 5 skids and through the ends 'b'f'the' Hews, Witnesses: c I
