Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. KnnN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Richmond, in the county of l/Vayne, and in the State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Outing-Cottages, of which the following is a lucid specification; and

I do hereby declare the following to be a full` clear, and complete description of my invention and the manner of its construction, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My present invention has reference, broadly, to a new architectural construction consisting of the parts substantially as shown and designed for the purposes particularly as hereinafter set forth.

The object of this invention, broadlyy speaking, is the provision of simple specific means for the construction of knockdown portable houses whereby their parts may be assembled and dissasembled expeditiously with a minimum of time and labor devoted thereto and whereby they will be endued with a maximum of efficiency when assembled and will be easily transportable when disassembled and properly packed. A

Another object is to provide an outing-cottage designed to substitute the ordinary canvas tent and also take the place of the more expensive summer-cottage, while at the same time lin-oviding a temporary habitat which may be easily transported in a small compass of space.l will be easily set up, will cover a comparatively large area, and will provide the highest degree of comfort when in use.

Another object is to provide an outing-cottage which may be constructed of any dimensions and having various forms of contour, to provide for the desired amount of shade controllable at will, to provide for the exclusion therefrom of insects and flies, and to provide for a free circulation of air therethrough or, if desired, to provide for the complete exclusion therefrom of drafts of air or cold and for excluding the sight of persons on the outside thereof; and, finally, the more particular object is to provide a temporary collapsible building especially designed for camping purposes, for hunters, resortcrs, and invalids desiring a large amount of fresh air, for chautauquas and summer assemblies, for use in the army, and for surveyors and contractors and for laborers and others employed in a torrid or temperate climate.

The detailed objects and particular advantages of my invention will appear more fully in the course of the ensuing specification, and the essential features will be set out in the claims terminating this specification.

In order that others familiar with the art to which my invention relates may construct and operate the same, I will now take up a detail description thereof, which I will refer to as briefly and compactly as I may.

In my efforts to simplify as far as possible the construction and manipulation of my invention and to attain the objects above stated I have provided the arrangement and construction substantially as shown most clearly in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an end elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my invention, taken on the line X X of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional elevation as taken on the line Z Z of Fig. 2. Fig. 4f is a detail view as taken on line Y Y of Fig. 3. Referring now to the drawings in detail, the letter A denotes the ground or l'loor line on which the cottage rests.

The side walls of the cottage1 consist of a plurality of upper and lower sections l and 2, respectively, each of said sections consisting, essentially, of a frame covered permanently by a wire screen or the like, as shown. T he lower sections 2 are placed edge to edge, forming a square inclosure, as indicated in Fig. 2, and are secured together each two by the upper sections 1 are placed edge to edge,

forming a square inclosu re of same dimension as that formeel by the lower sections and disposed thereon edge to edge, as shown in Fig. 1.

The upper sections are secured together each two by a pair of bolts 4E, one above and one below, disposed horizontally through the Vertical portions of the sections to bind the sections together to stien the side walls, the corners being secured in a similar manner as indicated in Fig. 1 and in same manner as are the lower sections as shown in Fig. 2. Also the upper and lower sections are secured together each by a pair of bolts 5 disposed vertically through the horizontal portions ot' the upper and lower sections, as shown.

Each pair of sections, formed by one upper and one lower section 1 and 2, are connected by a pair of hinges 6 6, which are secured on the inside faces o1' said sections, as indicated, whereby an upper and a lower section may be folded together when the bolts 3. 4, and 5 are removed. f' At one point in the walls an upper and a lower sectionv 1 and 2 are arranged to serve for a door (shown in Figs. 1 and 2) by simply connecting these two sections by a pairotl bolts 5, dispensing with the bolts 3 and et, and mounting the door thus 'formed to the adjacent pair of sections on the right by a pair of spring-hinges7 7, with alatch 8, provided on the left edge of the door, being adapted to engage the edge of the adjoining left section. The sections on each side ofthe door thus formed should be connected at the top and bottom by astrip, as 9, (shown in Fig. 2,) and as indicated in Fig. 1.

Extending' through the center across the top of the assembled sections is a center tiebar 10. Covering the top o1' the inclosure formed as stated is a plurality o1' screen-frame top sections 12. (Shown partly in Figs. 1, 3, and L1 and indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2.) The inner ends of each of the top sections 12 may be secured together endwise by the bolts 11 and may also be secured together sidewise byl the bolts 13, all as indicated in Fig. 2. From the centers of two opposite sides of the construction stated and at right angles to the tie-bar 10 rise the two king-posts 14 and 14', each having an open notch in its upper end to receive the ridge-pole 15, the said ridgepole being securable in place, as shown, bythe

16 and 16. At frequent distances apart and secured on the outer edges ot' the sections 12 are buttons 17. (Shown in Figs. 1 and 3.)

The numeral 18 denotes a canvas top or rootl having gable ends to be stretched over the ridge-pole 15,with its edgessecu red to said buttons 17.

The top sections 12 may he secured to the sections 1 at frequent points by means of hooks B, as shown in Fig'. 3.

Each o't' the upper sections 1 should be provided with an inner frame 20, over the face o1' which canvas 21 or the like is stretched and thereover removably securable by the buttons 22. The upper edge of each of the frames 2O is mounted to the upper bar of the sections 1 by a' pair of hinges C C, whereby the i'rame 20 may be opened out, as in Fig. 1, to form awnings for the cottage and being supportable in their extended positions each by a jointed arm 23. as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. lhe lower sections 2 may be provided each with a canvas similar to the canvas 21 to be buttoned thereon in a similar manner thereto.

Then disassembled, the sections may be packed in asectional or collapsible case or boX, which case or boX when taken apart may be employed as a floor for the cottage.

From the above description it will be apparent that my invention is composed, essentially, of screen-sections which may be folded together and packed in a small compass ot' space, that it may be easily and quickly set up when desired, and will otherwise attain the objects above stated, and it is also apparent that the various parts may be secured together by bolts or by hooks, or by both bolts and hooks, or by other similar means.

While I have herein shown and described the best means to me known at this time for the carrying' out of my invention in a practical manner, l desire it to be understood that I do not restrict myself to the exact details of construction shown and described, but 'hold that any changes or variations therein as would suggest themselves to the ordinary mechanic would clearly fall within the limits and scope o1c my invention.

Having now fully shown and described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In an outing-cottage composed oi a plurality o1' double vertical sections each upper and lower section being hinged together,means for connecting' the sections together, a plurality of horizontal sections forming a top and secured to the vertical sections, a gable-root' o1' fabric Jfor said structure, and an awningframe hinged to each of the upper vertical sections, all substantially as shown and described.

2. An outing-cottage formed of side walls consisting' of upper and lower screen-sections hinged together disposed vertically and forming' an inclosure, a plurality of top screen-sections covering said inclosu re and secured to the upper edges of said upper side sections, an upper and a lower side section secured together and forming a door, a ridge-pole extending IOO IIO

across the center and above the top sections, a gabled canvas roof extending over the ridgepole and having its edges buttoned to the screen-sections, and an awning-frame hinged to each upper side section Wlth means for supporting it extended, all su bstantialiy as shown und described.
