To all who 17bit may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT A. GRIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Tables, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to collapsible tables and while it is more especially designed for that class of tables known as chiropractic tables, it may be employed for any other purpose for which a collapsible table is desired. Its purpose is to make a table which shall be more firm and rigid than those commonly constructed and shall at the same time, be compact and light for purposes of carrying. I attain these purposes by the means set forth in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevation of one form of my table closed for tnnsportatio-n. Figs. '2 and 3 are a modified form of the collapsible brace. Fig. 4 shows an elevation of two of my tables nested together as hereafter described. Fig. 5 shows another form of my table partly set up. Figs. 6, 7 and S are details to show the construction of the collapsible brace.

The legs 2 of my device are hinged to the top 8, as shown in Fig. 4, by any preferred design of hinges, and toggle braces composed of two members 4 and 5, are used to hold the legs in a raised position. The member 4c is preferably formed from an iron rod having its middle portion pivotally connected to the member 5 and its outer extremities pivotally attached to two of the legs of the table, and the middle portion is doubled together and extended into the form of a-tongue 6 adapted to fit a groove 7 shown in Figs. 5 and 6 formed in the member 5. A spring catch 8, is adapted to engage with the extremity of the tongue 6 so that when the toggle brace is straightened so that the two members of the toggle are in line with each other they will be retained in that position until the spring 8 is released.

The member 5 may be considerably varied in construction without departing from my invention and may be constructed either of cast or wrought iron or any other suitable material. One modification of this member is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, another in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, Fig. 6 being a section along the line ax and 7 along the line g -g of Fig. 5.

For purposes of transportation, two of my tables may be adapted to be fitted together as shown in Fig. 4:. For this purpose, one table is constructed in the form of a suit case, as shown in Fig. 8, the top of the table forming a box into which the legs are folded, as shown in Fig. 1. When it is desired to pack the tables for transportation, one of the tables of the form shown in Fig. 5 may be collapsed and placed with the legs inside the box formed by the upper part of the other table, which will then form the edges and one side of a suit case; the top 3 of the table will then form the other side of the case or cover of the box and may be secured in place by any easily releasable means. In this way the two tables may be readily transported, occupying no more space than an ordinary suit case, as shown in Fig. 4, and may, with equal readiness be set up for service by merely removing the one from the other, straightening up the legs and forcing the tongue 6 into engagement with the spring catch 8, when the whole device will become firm and rigid.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A collapsible table comprising a top and legs arranged in pairs hingedly connected at their upper ends to the top so as to swing inwardly to a position substantially flat against the top, and a common bracing means for each pair of legs including a substantially U-shaped rod the arms of which are pivot-ally connected one to each leg intermediate its ends, a pivot rod, bearings at opposite ends of the rods of the table top, a link member having a sleeve connection at one end with the pivot rod and at its opposite end with the base of said. Ushaped rod, the link having a horizontally extended receiving groove or way intermediate its sides, an integral projection on the base of the U-shaped member intermediate its sides arranged to engage in said way and a spring lock on the link to engage said projection.
