ESTHER ARONSON, 0F IRON MOUNTAIN, MICHIGAN.
BEDSTEAD-CANOPY.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Es'rnnn AnoNsoN, a citizen ofthe Unit-cd States, and a resident oit the city of Iron Mountain, county of Dickinson, and State of Michigan, have in.- vented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead-Canopies, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bcdstead canopies and has for its object the production ot a device of this character which will be of an adjustable nature 1n order to adapt the same for use in conjunction with bedsteads of various sizes, and one which will be durable and economical in construction and el'iicient in use.
@ther objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists inthe combinations and arrangements et parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The invention will. be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan vieu7 of a bedstead canopy embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the canopy taken on substantially line m-m of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical transverse section oi the canopy, Fig. 4t is a sectional detail taken on substantially line g/-g/ of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective illustrating the means employed for holding the side frame members of the canopy in open or elevated position or for locking the same in closed position.
The preferred torni oit' construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises inverted substantially U -shaped supporting members which are adapted for arrangement upon a bedstead, one at either end thereof. Each of said supporting members comprises vertical bars 1, the upper ends of which are pivotally connected With the respective ends of a cross-bar 2, said members 1 and 2 being locked in operative position against pivotal movement by means of thumb screvvs 3. When the device is not in use, said supporting` frames may be collapsed or folded together, as Will be readily understood, by simply releasing the screws 3. The frame bars 2 are longitudinally adjustable, in order to adapt the same for use in conjunction With bedsteads of various widths. Each of said members 2 consists, as shown in Fig. 3, of two sections, the inner Specification of Letters Patent.

ends of which overlap. Said overlapping ends are releasably locked in positions of adjustment by means oit` a threaded stud fl, projecting from one oi said sections, Which engages an elongated slot 5 provided in the other, a thumb nut 4t threaded upon said stud affording means for clamping the bar sections together. lNith this arrangement it will be seen, that longitudinal adjustment of the frame members 2 in order to adjust the supporting frame to the Width desired may be eiiiected by simply adjusting thumb nut 4t. In use the lower ends of bars 1 of the supporting `iframes are supported upon the longitudinal bars or rails of the bedstead, clamps (i being provided at said ends of said frame bars `for engaging` said bedstead rails, asshown in Figs. 2 and 3.
Supported upon the upper sides oit the supporting frames is a canopy member or trame member, rectangular in form. Said frame member is of an adjustable nature in order to adapt the same for use in conjunction with bedsteads of various Widths, the same consisting of overlapping slidably connected sections 7 and 8, each of said sections being formed of an outer frame or edging and an inner portion oit Wire mesh or screening, as clearly shown. The sections 7 and 8 are secured in positions of adjustment by means of threaded studs 9 Which. project from the ends oit section 8 and Which enelongated slots 10 provided in the adjacent' portions of thc section 7, there being thumb nuts 11 tllrcaded upon the outer ends ott said studs, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. iVith this arrangement it will be seen, that considerable adjustment is aii'orded the upper frame member so as to ad apt the same to correspond with any width to which the supporting frames may be adjusted. Provided at the ends of the upper trame member are depending ears 12 which are adapted to e 1- gage against the-inner sides of the bars Q of the supporting trames for locking said frame member against relative longitudinal movement.
Depending from the edges of the upper trame member are end and side frame members 13 and 14rrespeetively. Said frame members 13 and 14 are hingedly and removably connected With the upper trame member by means of hooks 15 provided at and projecting from the edges of said upper frame member, said hooks being adapted for engagement by loops 16 provided at t-he upper edges ot' frame members 13 and let, as clearly shown in the several views, the arrangement being such that release ont said end and side members may be effected by raising the latter: until the loops 1G disengage hooks 15. The frame members 13 are constructed the same as the upper frame member so as to permit o1 adjustment thereof to correspond with adjustment of said upper frame member and o1 the supporting frames as above described, thumb nuts 17 cooperating with the component sections of frame members 13 to loclr the same in positions of adjustment. The end frame members are fastened to the bars 1 of the supporting frames by means of thumb nuts 1S Which engage threaded studs 19 projecting rom'said frame members and Which pass through slots or perforations provided in the posts 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
In order to permit of ingress to or egress from the bed in conjunction with which the canopy is used, the side frames 14 of the latter are hung loosely from the hooks 15 supporting the same. Cooperating with said side members are U-shaped wire members 20 which are pivotally and slidably connected vtherewith by engagementwith eyes 21 provided upon the inner sides of said iframe members, as clearly ushown in Fig. 5. The members 2OA are adapted to engage notches 22 provided in the outer edges ot' the bars 1 of the supporting frames to hold said side frame members in elevated or open positions, when entering or leaving the bed. Provided at the ends of Wire members 2O are eyes or loops 23 which, When said frame members are in closed position, are adapted to engage posts 24 provided upon the inner sides of frame members 1, as clearly shown in F ig. 3. Engagement with the posts 24 is effected, however, by first raising or upwardly sliding the members 2O until the loops 23 thereof are positioned above said posts, then lowering said members 20 to engage the loops 23 With said posts. When said loops are in engagement with said posts, it Will be seen that the side frame members will be securely locked in closed position. Thus the members 20 serve the double function of means fpr holding the side frame members in elevated or open position and of means for locking said frame members in closed position.
A canopy of the construction setI vforth is durable and economical, the same may be readily and easily arranged in position upon a bedstead and as easily and expeditiously detached therefrom when desired for storage or shipment. TWhen in position upon a bedstead the same is adapted to effectually inclose the bed to prevent the entry of mosquitoes and other insects Which might disturb the occupant of the bed. By reason of the adjustable character of the device, the
same is rendered applicable to beds of various sizes which is obviously of great advantage.
Vihile 1 have illustrated and described the preferred form ot construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation andmodification Without departing from the spirit of the invention.- I, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the exact details as set forth, but desire toavail myself of such variations and modiiications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patent is:
