To all whom it may con 061%. I
Be it known that we, HARRY S. FOLGER and Asa M. CoMsTooK, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, and Muskegon, county of Muskegon, and State of Michigan, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand- Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to hand stamps and has for its object improvements in such devices.
In the accompanying drawings, Figured is a side elevation with the movable type in unadjusted position; Fig. 2 is an elevatlon in section taken longitudinally of the type band supporting shaft 14 of Fig. 1, the movable type being shown in adjusted position; Fig. 3 is an elevation similar to Fig. 1 with the clamping screw removed Fig. 4 1s a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a partial elevation of the type carrying frame showing the manner in which the type shaft is held in the frame.
In the said drawings 10 is a metal casing, to the lower part of which is hinged a plate 11. On the bottom of plate 11 is secured a plate 12 having printed characters on the lower face thereof. There is an opening through plates 11 and 12 which communicates with the interior of the casing 10 through which opening the movable type herein to be mentioned protrude.
Inside of the casing 10 is a frame 13 which is made to fit in the interior and be guided by the walls of the casing 10. In the upper part of the frame 13 is a shaft 14 and below this is a shaft 15. Mounted on the shafts 14 and 15 are rubber bands which carry movable type 16, which movable type are adapted to project through the openings in the plates 11 and 12. In the sides of the casing 10 opposite the ends of the shaft 14 are slots 17 through which pass screws 18, and under the heads of these screws are washers 19. The screws 18 are screwed into the shaft 14 and serve to clamp said shaft and consequently the frame 13 at any desired fixed position within the casing 10. A spring 20 located over the frame 13 and between the said frame and the top of the casing 10 acts to push the frame 13 downward so as to cause the movable type 16 to protrude through the openings below the Specification of Letters Patent.

faces of the fixed type characters on the plate 12.
Hand stamps which carry movable type within casings as herein described and which protrude through openings in fixed type, are well known in the art, although the construction is not precisely the same as herein shown. In devices of this kind as herein before known, the adjustment of the movable type has been made by screws, and to make such adjustment requires attention and care on the part of the person who does it. It is one of the objects of our invention to make this adjustment automatic in that no direct concentrated attention is required of the operator to make the adjustment accurate. This is accomplished in this case by loosening the screws 18 so that the spring 20 will act directly upon the frame 13 to push the type 16 outward as shown in Fig. 1. While in this condition, if the hand stamp has its face pressed against some resisting object as the table A. of Fig. 1, the contact between the movable type 16 and the resisting object will cause the frame 13 to be pushed inward so that the movable type will come upon a level with the fixed type on the plate 12. In this position, if the screw 18 be tightened, then the movable type will be secured at the desired position without special effort on the part of the operator to obtain its correct adjustment. We call this our automatic adjustment of the movable type because adjustment to desired position on a level with the type 12 is auto matically accomplished by the mere act of pressing the type against a resisting object. As type plates 12 are frequently removed and other type plates put in place which are not of the same thickness as the ones previously used, it will be seen that some adjustment which is convenient and quickly made accurate is very desirable.
The shafts 14 and 15 may be loose but we prefer to secure the shaft 14 from turning in its bearing by making a small square tenon thereon as shown at 21 iln Fig. 5. This square fits into a similarly square opening, cut in the frame 13.
What we claim is In a hand stamp, a casing, a type-holding frame longitudinally movable within said casing, a bow spring the middle portion of which is fastened to the frame and the other portion of which presses against the inner and upper side of the casing and acting to force said frame in one direction so that the type held thereby will protrude more than the desired amount from said casing, means by which upon placing the stamp against a resisting body in the manner in which it is to be used the protruding type will be automatically and resistingly pushed back to the desired position against the action of the spring, a shaft forming part ofthe support of the movable characters, and screws HARRY S. FOLGER. ASA M. COMSTOOK.
