CONVERTIBLE BED AND GOUGH.
Specification of Letters Pdtent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1M3.
Application filed August 17, 1912. Serial No. 715,5$6.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, isAAc MASON and JOSEPH JoHN McINTYnn, both citizensv of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Convertible Bed and Couch, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to household furniture, and its object is to provide a new and improved convertible bed and couch or davenport, arranged to permit (if convenient and uick converting of the piece of furniture rom a couch or a davenport to a bed or vice versa, the bed and couch being very comfortable and capable of use anywhere in a room, and the couch and its seat being exceedingly soft, pliable and springy and its back being upholstered.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a frame formed of a head section, a middle section, and a foot section, the said middle section having slidable connection with the said head section, and the said foot section having pivotal. connection with the said middle section whereby the footsection can be folded upon the middle section and moved with the latter into folded position on the head sectionto form a couch, davenport or set-tee, or the parts extended to form a bed.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in" the accompanying drawings forming a part of thisspecification, in which similar characters of reference indicate correspond ng parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the piece of furniture arranged as a couch, davenport or a settee; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevati'on of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the piece of furniture arranged as ahed; Fig. 4 is an enlarged front end elevation of the couch with the mattress section omitted; Fig. 5 is a'plan view of the bed with the mattress section omit-ted; Fig. 6. is-{an enlarged cross section of the slidingconnection between thehead and middle section; and Fig. 7 is a sectional plan view of the same.
Q The frame for the, piece of furniture is made'in' three sections A, B and Q, of which A is thehead section, B the middle section andlllthdfodt' section. The bed spring is likewisemade in three parts- D, D and D individually secured to the said frame sections A, B and C, and the mattress is also made of three sections E, Eand Ff adapted to overlie the bed spring sections D, D and gD dwhen the piece of furniture is used as a The mattress section E is adapted to form the back of the couch, davenport or settee, as indicated in Fig. 1, and the under side of this section E is preferably upholstered with leather or a similar 'material. The mattress section E is adapted to form the seat of the couch, davenport or settee and is likewise upholstered on the under side with leather or the like. the section E is provided with an apron E adapted to form the front lower portion of the couch, davenport, or settee, as indicated in Fig. 1.
The middle section B is mounted to slide lengthwise on the head section A, and the foot section C is connected at the sides by hinges F with the middle section B to permit of swinging the foot section C onto the top of thellniddle section B, and to allow of moving the folded foot section with the middle section on the head section A to con-- vert the bed into a couch, davenport or set-tee, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The head sectionrl. is preferably provided with rear and. front legs A and A, and the middle section 18 is provided at its outer end with legs B, and the foot section 0' is rovided with rear and front legs C, G. n ornamental-or other filling C is arranged between the said legs 0', C and formswith the latter side arms for the couch, davenport onset-tee when the paits are in the folded position indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The sliding connection between the head section A and the middle section B is arranged as follows, specialreference' beinghad to Figs. 5 and 6: The side rails A of the head section A. are provided along their inner faces with longitudinally-extending guideways Gr rigidly connected with each other by cross bars H near the front and rear ends. Each guideway G is preferably made of an angle, and a channel iron'fastened to the angle iron, see Fig. 6, the angle iron beingsecured to the side rails and the upper member of the channel iron forming a top flange G" for the guideway, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 6.
The side rails B of the middle seetion'Bare of inverted. li-shape and preferably is f of channel irons.
The foot section G is provi cross rail G adapted to rest on a cross forming an integral connectingimern er oi the angle iron or the guideway G, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig.
On the vertical member of each side rail B are journaled rollers Ti and d, of which the roller 1 is disposed vertically and is adapted to travel on the corresponding guideway G, while the other roller 5 is disposed horizontally and is adapted to travel on the inner vertical member of the guideway G. Thelower edge of the outer verti cal member of each rail B is in engagement with the top ofa roller it: journaled on the front end of the head section A so that the middle section B can be readily moved inward or outward on the head section A without danger of one section binding on the other and without unduly straining the parts especially as the horizontal roller J takes up the strain incident to the Weight of the person on the spring section D fastened to the rails B As shown in Figs. 5, 6 and i, the bed spring section I) is preferably attached to the rails B by angle irons B secured. to the said rails, and similar angle irons G are attached to the guideways G for connection with the spring section 1).
in order to prevent the middle section B from being pulled out too far relative to the head section A, use is made of stop pins L held on the outer end of the guideways G for the rollers J to abut against.
The convertible bed and couch, davenportor settee shown and described is very simple in construction and can be readily converted from one piece of furniture to another.
It is understood that when the parts are extended to form a bed, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and it is desired to convert the bed into a couch, davenport or settee, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it is only necessary for the user to swing the foot section C upward and rearward onto the middle section B and then push the superimposed sections B and C in ward on the head section A, from which, however, the mattress section E was re moved and placed against the back or" the head section to form the back for the couch, davenport or settee. It will be noticed that when the foot. section C is swung onto the top of the section B the upholstered under side of the mattress section E forms the seat and the apron E depends from the seat so as to give the couch, davenport or settee a nice appearance. It will further be noticed that the ornamental filling C and the legs C and C form arm rests or sides for the couch, davenport, or settee.
lVhen the piece of furniture is in the form of a couch, settee or davenport, the
' upon the same,
g sections D, D, D as well 5 ctions E, E, E are in use dingly soft, pliable and he couch. davenport or settie form of a bed, couch, davenport or settee, can be readily used in any of the room as its parts are selfsustainiag and ornamental.
The roller 1 is sufliciently large in diameter to engage the under side of the top flange G in case the floor is uneven, thus limiting the up play or the section B when running the same in or out of the section 1%..
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
