Description

To all whom; it may concern:
`'nLrPHAnna* n. PARKER,
or B'uo-K'sronfr. MAINE.
Letters Patent No. 105,719, dated July 26, 1870; antedted July 18, 1870.
rMPRovnMnN-r 1N PLANKrNe-snr.
' MAW-* Be it known that I, ELIPHALET H. PARKER, of` Bucksport, in the countybf Hancock and State of Maine, have invented a new and improved Planking- Set, an instrumentused for setting down plank when `planking a'vessel, lof which' the kfollowing is a full,
clear-,and exact descrip'ton, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making partfof this'specification, inwhich- Figure 1 represents aperspective elevation of 4my invention. y l
Figure 2, `the sameinstrument as applied between two timbers and tothe top-,edge-of a plank for setting or forcing it down. i
follows: 1 p y l p Fig, l consists of astai, A, the upper part of which is formed into a h0ok,- B, the bill or under side being ator near a rightA angle' with the stad'.
Under the bill of the hook I place a curved metal pad, l O, between which and the plank G a wedge, I, is driven, to 'forcefor set `the plank down. l
`Swinging arms D D are pivoted to each edge of .The nature and construction of my invention are as l `the stati, at or near its.. lower e'nd,vand a little above l the pivoting of thearms, and on each side ofthe stati",
is a projecting-lip, E.
m is formed, as clearly'shown i in 4thedrawings',with dverging projections or extremities y. Each lip E is intended to act in conjunction `with one of thearmswhenjinuse.
The Schedule referred be inithese Letters Patent nd making part of the same Fig. 2 represents myimproved planking-set in use.
F 'VF represent two timbers.
Gr G, the plank, with a portion of the center removed, to 'show the portion of'V the set when in use.
A B O .D E show the set in position.
I, the wedge, to set the plank down. i Theset being'placed between the timbers and behind the plank, one of the arms, corresponding to the width of' the space between the timbers, is placed against one timber; the opposite lip rests against the other; the wedge'is placed between the pad O and the top edge of the plank, and driven forward; this causes one of the projections, g, to enter or indent the timber, and, the oppositelip E to indentland engage with the opposite timber, which holds the set `from rising, and when the wedge i s driven, the plank is forced down.' wedge.
-Haviug thus described my invention, p What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is- Theset is liberated by releasing the` The planking-set herein described, consisting Vof a l staff', A, hook B, pad Ofpivoted arms D D, and lips 'E E, all constructed, combined, and arranged, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
