Be it known that l, HARLEY HILL, a citizen of the United States of America, resid ing at Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVork-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in work supports and is more especially designed for use by jewelers and engravers.
The principal object of the present invention is the provision of a holder in which the worl: to be operated upon may be easily and securely positioned in such a manner as to be freely revolved so that access may be readily had to the several sides thereof.
A device is also provided which is simple and easy to manufacture although at the same time possessing the required strength for all uses to which it designed to be employed.
The device is especially adaptable for holding finger rings which are to be engraved upon either the exterior or inner surface thereof and the holder frame is adapted to be positioned and secured in the ordinary bench vise employed in the trade or engravers block.
YVit-h these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the device consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 8 is a bottom plan view of the device, and Fig. at is an enlarged detail view of a portion of the device.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, the main support for the device consists in the circular ring 10 which is mounted, preferably integrally upon the substantially square block 11, which is adapted to be mounted in a bench vise by its insertion between and engagement with the clamping jaws thereof, it being obvious the device may thus be positioned either vertically or Specification of Letters Patent.

Said ring 10 is provided at the upper edge of the outer periphery thereof with an annular seat or shoulder 12 while completely encircling said ring is a circular band or annulus 13 which is provided with an inner projecting flange 1 1 at the top thereof which is adapted to be seated upon said shoulder 12 when said ring and an nulus are assembled.
Fitting within the annulus 13 is provided the spider member 15 preferably constructed of a single piece of metal and having three peripheral sections 16 equally spaced apart through the centers of which are provided suitable hold-fast devices, such as screws 17 for securing the spider member to the annulus, while the spider and annulus are normally so positioned that the annular shoulder 18 of the spider member loosely receives and retains the ring 10 therein with such a relative play between the parts that the combined spider and annulus are free to revolve upon the ring support 10. The said spider member is also provided with three angularly equidistant inwardly extending radial abutments presenting three equidis tant squared inner faces 19. Screw-threaded perforations 20 provided through said abutments receive the clamping screws 21 which are thus positioned radially of the device. By the use of swivelly mounted bearing blocks or pads 22 upon the inner ends of the screws, this means is adapted for securely holding therebetween such a member as a ring, 'as shown in Fig. 3, said screws being preferably provided with operating heads 23 which will thus be positioned within the protecting cages 2 1. At points upon the inner periphery of what may be termed the reverse side of the annulus 13 registering with the interrupted portions of the spider, such edge is slightly beveled or curved, as at 25 to allow easier access to the operating screw heads 23.
The outer periphery of the annulus is preferably roughened for affording a better gripping surface for the hand in manipulating the device.
From the above description the operation of the device, it is believed will be apparent.
The work holder having been securely positioned for instance in a vertical plane in a bench vise with the face of the same shown in Fig. 1 directly in front of the operator, a ready manipulation of the clamping horizontally with respect to the block 11, 5 screws 21 will readily position a ring or and with either side of the device facing the l other member therein and upon which it is desired to engrave or inscribe a name for instance upon the inner periphery thereot. Access may thus be had to the uninterrupted inner surface of the ringwhich is held be tween the blocks 22 which may be of any convenient form and suitably cushioned it' desired and mounted by some form of swivel upon the clamping screws 21, so as to be tree from rotation therewith. The revolving of the ring for the purpose of working upon di'tlerent portions of the sides thereof is readily e'ti'ected by a turning of the an nulus 13 by the hand of the operator which results in a conse uent revolution of the spider lti and the ring 26 or other piece of work mounted therein.
While the forms ol the invention herein set :torth are believed to be the preite "able embodiments thereof, it nevertheless to be understood that changes may be made in term, proportion and minor details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope ot the invention as specifically set forth in the accompanying claims.

A device of the class described comprising a block member, a circular supporting' ring secured to one side of said member, an annulus surrounding said support and freely reyoluble thereon, a spider member positioned within said support and freely revoluble therein and cooperating shoul ders provided upon said annulus a nd. spider adapted for retaining the supporting ring therein.

A device out the class described com prising a block member, a circular supporting ring secured to one side of said member, an annulus surrounding said support and freely revoluble thereon, a spider member positioned within said support and freely revoluble therein, cooperating shoulders provided upon said annulus and spider adapted for retaining the supporting ring therein, securing means between said annulus and spider, three angular-1y equidistant abutments provided on said spide and a clamping screw mounted upon each abutment and arranged radially of said spider, annulus and support.

A device of the class described comprising a block member, a circular ring support secured to one side thereof, an outer peripheral annular shoulder provided upon said ring, an annulus surrounding said rine and freely revoluble thereon, an inwardlyiirojectii'ig annular flange provided upon said annulus and adapted. to engage said ring shoulder, a spider member positioned within said ring and securing said ring between the same and th" annulus and securing means between said annulus and spider and the work clamping screws radially journaled within said spider.
