Application filed mus .18,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I','VVILL1A1\I E. (Ins st, a citizen of the United States,'residing at State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lathe-Chucks; and ill do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame. I
The present invention relates to" lathe chucks, and has for its purpose to provide a device of that character'whichis capable of holding regular or irregular pieces of uniform or different sizes in positions for working, and one wherein the desired adjustments may be easily made and effectively secured in set position.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter claimed,
and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details shown and described, still for the purpose of disclosure reference is bad to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the support, and; Fig. 4 is a central vertical sectional view of the device, with the chuck blocks in elevation.
Referring to the construction in detail and wherein like characters of reference indicale' corresponding parts in the different views shown, the construction consists in a rcvoluble support 1 having a central screwthreaded aperture 2 for mounting the same on its'supporting shaft. The outer face of the support 1 is provided with a plurality of equally distant and radially disposed .'e-
- cesses 3 cmmter-slmk therein. Said recesses 3 extend to the edge of the support 1. and at such points have substantially thatdesign indicated by the churn lcr -l in liz. 2, and s are slugghl'ly in-- clincd or beveled fora ently described. p
A chuck block holder .3 is mounted in each of the recesses ll, i:-; provided \\'lll\ a relatively short sll l '5' that extends throngrh an aperture 8 in ll Each of the shal"; "raw-lhrcadcd lo receive a locking nut 5i, ruruugrh the medium ol Specification of Letters Patent.
purpose to be pres- 1911. Serial no. erases. I
which the chuck block holders (3 are secured within the recesses 3 at different angular positions. The sides 10 of the members 6 are also inclined or beveled complementary to the sides 5 of the recesses 3, the purpose whereof being to secure a wedge action be tween the sides of the chuck block holders and recesses, through the tightening means (7 and 9) when said holders have been set to the adjusted positions.
Each of the chuck block holders 6 is provided with a chuck block 11 of any appro Said blocks 11 arepriate construction. adaptedto be radially adjusted within the holders 6 with r spect to the support 1 through the --medium of ribs or guides 1.2 formed in the holders 6, and which fit within grooves or guideways 13 formed in theblocks 11. The under side of each of the blocks 11 is formed with a half screw-tl'lreaded way 1.4 to receive a screw-threaded shaft 15, and said shafts 15 are mounted to rotate in the chuck block supports 6. The shafts 15 have the inner and outer ends thereof squared as at 16, wherebythe shafts may be turned through the medium of a suitable tool for effecting radial adjustment- Of the blocks 11, as above stated. And this radial adjustment of the blocks 11 may be effected through the outer squared ends of the shafts 15 since the rotatable members 6 project beyond'the edge of the support 1, via, the opening 4-, and thereby afford a. relatively great arcuate distance through which said shaft ends may be engaged.
From the foregoing it will be readily understood that the blocks ll may, through the means for radial adjustment, be set. at the required relative distances for holding regular pieces of different sizes for working, and through the angular adjustment attainable by the chuck block SUPPOHZS (3 the chuck blocks ll may be set. at various angular positions for holding irregular pieces of different sizes.
it is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction arid arrangicmei-ll. of parts without departing from the spirit ol my invention, and therefore 1 do not wish lo be limited to such features except as may he required by the claims.
