FRITZ KADE, OF SANDUSKQOHIO.
BORING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 269,533, dated December 26, 1882.
l Application filed May 24, 1882. (No model.)
To allichom it may concerny l Be it known that I, FRlTZ KADE, ofSandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Boring-Bars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of boring-machines wherein the cutter-bar revolves, and also slides with an endwise motion,
the work being at rest.
The object of my invention is to constructa very compact, simple, and handy tool, especially adapted to cut or recut tapering holes for wrist-pinsin cranks, pitman-rods, 85o., without removing` the work from its position and leaving it to the skilled workman to secure the tool to the work by any kind ot' temporary sup. port or clamps, as the circumstances will suggest, all as more fully hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a vertical central section ot' my improved tool. Fig.2 is a-perspectivevview of the head-stock with the adj ustahle cutter-bar bearing. Fig. 3 is a similar view, but from the `opposite or inner side. ,Fig et is a. vertical cross-section of the parts shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the ball bearing head-stock. Fig. 6 is a perspective view ot' the cutter-head. Fig. 7 is a perspecvbearing C, and the opening within which it rests is oblong in cross-section a-nd admits of adjusting the box either centrally or eccentrically to the bearing C, four set-screws, cc d d, being used to hold the box in its adjusted position. The set-screws d d are attached to sliding plates e, with their lower ends engaging in corresponding recesses upon the sides of the box I), so that however the latter is shifted in its position the set-screws d d can be made to bear centrally against its sides. The box D has a central bore, g, of proper size to allow the cutter-bar A to freely slide through it, the spliuefengaging with the groove in the cutting-bar. The box D terminates upon the inner side in the feed-cam E, upon the face of which the feed-pawl F is forced to travel.
' Gr is thefeed-nut, and its hub is provided with a female screw engaging with the feed-screw of the cutter-bar, while its cogs engage with the pawl F whenever the latter drops into the cut-away portion h of the cam E.
H is a cutter-head, to which the cutting-bit I is secured in the usual manner. This cutter head is threaded upon the cutter-bar, and can be secured upon the same in any desired position by means of theset-screw z'.
J is a head-stock supporting the other end of the cutting-bar. It forms a bearing for the ball-box K, throughwhich the cutter-bar is al lowed to slide freely.
In practice, the parts being constructed as described, the cutter-bar is passed through the hole upon which the work isto be done; then the 4head-stocks are secured in temporary supports, which are clamped or bolted to the work. In Fig. 7 is shown a very simple support, L, for the head-stocks, which will be found service- `able for most klnds of work, the set-screws l;
allowing the head-stock to be nicely adjusted, while the bolts l will securely clamp the device to the work. Now, if the box D is adjusted eccentrically within the bearing C, the latter, on being rotated, will imparta conical motion to the cutter-bar, the apex of the cone being located in the center of the ballbox K, and if the cutter is adjusted to perform the work it will cut a tapering hole, the cutter-bar A being pushed laterally at every revolution of the bearing C by nleans of the feed-nut G, cam E, and pawl F, which act in a well-knowu manner. No particular devices for rotating the bearing C are shown in the drawings; but in most instances it ,will be found convenient to secure a gear-wheel upon the part m of the bearing C and rotate it by means of a crank and pinion. The operator ot' course can in every instance make the tool cut any taper heV wishes by properly adjusting the two factors which regulate it-viz., the distance between ICO the head-blocks and eccentricity of the box I). It' the latter is secured in the axial center of the bearing U, the tool Will bore a hole with parallel sides. In adjusting the head-blocks upon the work care should be taken to make their axial centers coincide with the cen'tex` of the bore to be cut or recnt.
The invention isdesigned as an improvement upon the device set Forth in Patent No.105,265, ot' 1870, as specifically pointed out in the claims.
It will he understood that the box I) `is adjustable in the bearing C to give the desired angle to the cutter-bar. Motion being given to said cutter-bar, and the pawl F being engaged with the nnt G to hold it stationary, it follows that the cutter-bar will have longitudinal movement until the said pawl F is forced out of such engagemenhby the cam E, which action stops the feed.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a tool for cutting taper holes, a cutterbar having a feedscrew and a longitudinal groove, a leed-nut, a paw] engaging with said nut to hold it still, and thus cause the cutterbar to have a longitudinal movement, and a cam for releasing said pawl, combined with an eccentrically-adjustable bearing having inter nal spline, and a head-stoel; with a circular interior bearing, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a tool for cutting taper holes, the combination ofthe head-stock B, circular bearing C, provided with devices for rotating it, eccentrically-adjustable bearing` D, stationary setscrews c, and laterally-adjustable plate Vor nut e and set-screw d, all combined substantially as described.
3. In a tool for cutting` taper holes, the combination of the cutter-bar A, having feed-screw a and groove b, with cutter-head H, feed-nut G, pawl F, and cam E, and with the box D, having` spline f, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above as my invention I have hereunto affixed my signa 45 ture this 27th day ot' March, 1882.
FRITZ KABE.
