FRANK LA'oTIs LATHROP, 0F WALLINGEQRD, CNNECTICUT, AssmNoR To H. L Joon eoMPANY, or WALLINGEOBD, oo NNggzcrIcUT, A CORPORATION or NEW YORK renfrew-Ron.
T 0 all whom 'il may conce-rn Bc it known that. I, FRANK LA Gris las Timor, a citizen obthe United States, residingt "allingford, county of New Haven, StaGnCOnneCtiCut, have invented certain new Iand useful lmlwovements in Curtain- Rods, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in curtain rods of the type designed to support sash curtains, and the main'object of the invention 'is tcprovide in an extension curtain 'rod of this type, means for holding it against. accidental displacement.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a curtain rod with its brackets, a portiouof the rod being broken away; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a relatively enlarged detail view partly in section; F ig. 4 is a cross-section on the line Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a slight modification; and, Fig. 6 is a section on the line y-y, Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary top plan view, with parts broken away, illustrating the engagement of the rcd ends with the brackets.
1*-2 represent two telescopi'.` sections of a tubular curtain rod.
` 3 4 represent brackets of any suitable design arranged to support the aforesaid rod sections.
3- represents the end of the bracket 3, Y, vsigned specially to receivethe end of rod in such a manner as to hold it against accidental displacement. This-bracket end 3 and the end of ,the adjacent section of the curtain rod are. spegroove 5. The rod section, at its end atleast,'
is split longitudinally, either specially or incidental to the manufacture of the tube. Since the rod section is split, it. follows that it may be sprung open somewhat u on ressure beingapplied. The-extremityo the bracket end 3 is' )referablyl' rounded or tapered so as to easiily enter the end of the Specification of Letters Patent.

Application tiled August 17, 1912. Serial No 715,5131.
tube. and force its way through the contraction formed by the annular ribG. In the preferable construction, the socket end of the rod section is covered by a ferrule or tubular cap 7, which is secured to the rod in such a manner as toA reinforce the same,
" tubular cap or reinforcement i' may comprise an overhanglng Flange S at one end and a contracted portion S) at the other end pressed into a groove oraround a shoulder formed on the rod section l.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the construction is similar to that previously described, with the single exception that a Cshaped spring 10 located in the groove back of the rod t), said C-shaped spring exerting a pressure in a dinection to force the said rih into the annular groove, thus giving added security and "furnishin a. con. struction which is preferable when t 1e metal of the tube 1 is of comparatively small gage.
'hat I claim is:
1. In a curtain rod, a sliding tubular rod section having a socket end, said socket end being split longitudinally, a bracket support arranged to enter said socket end, a annular groove on one part and a projection on the other part arranged to enter said groove and hold said parts against accidental displacement, and a stationary sleeve carried by said rod section spaced' from and in closing the split socl et end thereof.
2. ln a curtain rot a slitting tubular rod section having a socket end, said socket end being split longitudinally, a bracket. support arranged to enter said socket end, an annular groove on said bracket support, and a transversely arranged rib on the inner side of said split socket end arranged to enter said groove. and a stationary sleeve carried by said rod section spaced from and inc-10S- ing the split socket end thereof.
23. ln n curtain rod` a sliding tubula'r rod section having a socket cud. said socket end being .split longitudinally and having a Stationar)v sleeve spaced from :1nd inclosing its split portion. a bracket support arranged to enter said socket end, an annular groove on said bracket support. a transversely arranged rib on the inner side of said split socket end arranged to enter sad groove, to enter said groove, a spring ring embrac-'lf and a spring embracing said split socket end. ing said split socket end and seated in said 4.. `In -a curtain rod, a sliding tubular rod rib indentatonLand a stationary ferrule cariie'ction having a socket endrsadocket end red by said rod section and spaced from .a eing split longitudinally, a. bracket supand nclosing the split socket end thereof.
"port arranged to enter said socket end, an FRANK LA OTIS LATHROP. annular groove on said bracket support, an \Vitnesses: mdented transversely extending rxb on the R. D. PERIUNS,
nger-@de of said split socket end arranged R. F. STUART.
