Be it known that I, WALTER W. Hooves, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lll) eral, in the county of Se-ward' and State of vKansas, haveunvented new and'us'eful Improvements in Heading-Shears, of which the following is as ecifi ation.

This invention is an improved heading shear which is especially adapted forheadin broom corn, Kafir corn, maize, cane, and otEer similar crops, the object of the inven tion being to i'ovide an'improved shear of this kind which operates ,to automatically grasp and hold the boot or lower end of the cut stalk of the head'and prevent it from dropping when cut, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and ar-- rangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed. V

In the accompanying drawings :--Fi gure 1 is partlya side elevation and partly a sec tional view of a heading shear constructed in accordance with my invention, and showing the same open. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line H of Fi 1. My improved heading shears comprise a pair of cutting jaws 1- 2 which are here v shown as made of sheet steel and are respecr tively provided with integral handles"34. These handles are in effect semi-tubular in shape, so that theyare hollow or channeled on their opposing sides. Each 'handle is connected .to its jaw by an ofiset 5, the said offsets of the respective jaws crossing and being pivotally mounted on a bolt 6.

In connection with the cutting jaw 2, I provide a clamping jaw 7 which corresponds substantially with the jaw 2 in shape and size and'is spaced therefrom, the offset portion 8 of the clamping jaw 7 being also pivotally mounted'on the bolt 6 and the handle portion 9 of the-clampi jaw bein fitted in the channel of the han le 4 of-sai jaw 2 and terminating in a U -shaped arm 10 which fits'in the channel of the handle 4 and engagesastop 11 which is turned inwardly from the outer side of said handle. A spacing sleeve 12 is placed on the. pivotal bolt 6 between the jaw and the clamping jaw '7 and on'one end of the said pivotal bolt is a washer 13 which bears on the offset 8 of the jaw 7 and a nut 14 which bears on i I Specification of Letters Patent, I Patented Application filed June 19, 1912. opening through which the pivotal bolt ex tends. This locking arm is a'rran ed' on the outer side of the offset 5 of the aw 1, has outtnrned sides 16 which bear against opposite sides of the head of the bolt and'the said lockingarm has its outer end turned 'ini the said washer. ' In connection with the clamping jaw 7, I employ a clamping arm 23 which is made of spring wire. The clamping armis substantially U-shaped and arranged with its sides on opposite sides of the clamping jaw I! so that the serrated edge '24 of said clamping jaw is adapted to pass between the sides of said clamping arm. The terminals of the clamping arm are formed with coils 25 which are arranged on a stud 26 that projects from opposite sides of the clamping jaw 7, the terminal portions oft-he'clamp ing arm being arranged in the bottom of the channel in the handle 3 of the eu'ttingjaw 1 and hearing at their ends under one arm of the spring which serves to open the jaws.

When the cutting jaws-are closed their respective cutting edges move past each other so as to cut a stalk of cane Kafir corn, or the like between them and the closing movement of the cutting jaws causes the extension or terminal of the spring clamping arm,

by hearing against the bottom of the channel of the handle 3 to turn the said clamping arm'on its pivot and move it toward the serrated edge of the clamping jaw. Hence, at

the same time that the cutting jaws close the clamping arm also closes against the serrated edge of the clamping jaw and the said 'clamping arm and clamping jaw coact to grasp opposite sides ofthe stalk, which is being cut, and, hence, the stalk is held when 5 cut and is Ipreventedfrom'dropping.k

In using the heading shears, the same are made in the form, proportion and construc tion of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invent-ion and within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim I s 1.
